When Moses died at the age of 120, the Bible tells us that the Lord buried him. As Moses represents the law, we see here a snapshot of how it was the Lord Himself who “buried the law” at Mount Calvary. Only Christ Himself, not man, could put an end to the law (Romans 10:4, Ephesians 2:15, Hebrews 8:13).

Deuteronomy 34:6
And He buried him [Moses] in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day.

Moses was buried in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor, exactly where, nobody knows. That his grave’s location remains unknown to this day tells us that God doesn’t want us to “know where the law is.” He doesn’t want us to find its grave, dig it up and live by it. This parallels the lost ark (Hebrew, “coffin”) of the covenant, which contains the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments. Till this day, no one really knows where the ark is. Like Moses’ grave or coffin, God doesn’t want us to locate the ark, remove the lid and bring out the Ten Commandments. In short, He really doesn’t want us to go back to the law that His Son has buried.

The meaning of “Moab” (the place where Moses was buried) is best understood by the question, “Who’s your daddy?” or “What’s your father?” The spiritual significance here is that going to the land of the law and living therein will cause you not to have a close and intimate relationship with God. You will not know God as Daddy or Abba, because the law puts a distance between you and God. After God gave His people the law at Mount Sinai, He told them not to come near the mountain (Exodus 19:12).

The Bible also tells us that Moses was buried opposite Beth Peor, meaning “house of Peor.” Peor refers to Baal Peor, the god of the Moabites. But it also refers to the mountaintop upon which Balaam, hired by Balak, tried to curse God’s people. Here, we see how if you go back to the law, you will face a mountain from which curses are dispensed. Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13). Don’t go back there! The law will minister only condemnation and death to you when you try to live under it (2 Corinthians 3:7–9).

The next verse, verse 7, tells us,

“Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eyes were not dim nor his natural vigor diminished.”

Christ may have put an end to the law, but make no mistake, its eyes have not grown dim nor has its power abated. As a precious brother shared with me, the eyes of the law are still as sharp as ever in spotting all your sins, and the law is still well able to oppress you with its heavy yoke, if you choose to live by it.

How can we live holy lives then, without going back to the law? That’s where the final verse, verse 9, comes in:

“Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.”

Joshua’s name means “Yahweh is salvation.” So while Moses represents the law, Joshua represents Jesus (“salvation”), who came as “grace and truth” (John 1:17). Joshua brought the Israelites into the promised land, not Moses. Only grace and truth can bring you into the promised land of rest, not the law.

The verse then tells us that the Israelites “heeded him [Joshua], and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.” The spiritual truth here is that when you heed Jesus or grace and truth, you will end up fulfilling the commandments or the law. In fact, you will do above and beyond what the law demands. Zacchaeus, after receiving the grace shown by Jesus, didn’t just stop cheating, but he also became a giver, giving half of his goods to the poor (Luke 19:8). He exceeded fulfilling the demands of the law when he heeded grace.
