I agree, 1 Samuel 28 is a significant and complex passage, able to stretch our "belief" and spiritual understanding muscles
Context of 1 Samuel 28: Saul and the Witch of Endor
In
1 Samuel 28, King Saul, in desperation, seeks guidance from the deceased prophet Samuel after God has stopped communicating with him. Saul visits the witch of Endor, a medium, and asks her to summon Samuel’s spirit. The witch appears to summon a figure that identifies itself as Samuel, and the figure speaks to Saul, prophesying his downfall and death.
Key Bible Verses in 1 Samuel 28:11-20:
- 1 Samuel 28:11-14: "Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul. And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth. And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself."
- 1 Samuel 28:15-19: The figure speaks to Saul, predicting his defeat in battle and his death, along with the death of his sons.
Relying on our Biblical understanding of Spiritualism as being an underlying deception of Satan, ( Lie #1 )
The Bible provides insight that supports the understanding of this apparition as demonic. A few key elements in the passage and related texts highlight that what Saul encountered was not the real Samuel.
- 1 Samuel 28:13-14: The medium (witch) describes seeing "gods ascending out of the earth." This description suggests a supernatural or non-human presence, which is more consistent with demonic activity than with a true spirit of a human.
- Deuteronomy 18:10-12: God clearly forbids practices such as necromancy, divination, and spiritism. If God condemns these practices, it is unlikely that He would allow the real Samuel to appear through a witch, which would contradict His law.
- "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord."
- Isaiah 8:19 also warns against seeking counsel from mediums and spiritists:
"And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?" This suggests that seeking spiritual knowledge through mediums or the dead is contrary to God's will.
- The Dead are Unconscious: The Bible consistently teaches that the dead are unconscious, awaiting the resurrection. Job 14:12 says, "So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep."
- Psalm 115:17 states, "The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go down into silence."
The Demonic Apparition Interpretation:
1. In the book The Great Controversy, Ellen White writes:
"The Bible clearly states that the dead know not anything (Ecclesiastes 9:5). The message given to Saul was from a spirit pretending to be Samuel, but it was not really Samuel. It was a counterfeit, an illusion brought by the power of Satan to deceive Saul. The dead are asleep until the resurrection."
- Ecclesiastes 9:5: "For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten."
