I was listening to the radio this morning and realized that a lot of songs about love and devotion step over the line into idolatry.

Verses like "I give all my happiness, all my love and adoration" to another person makes me take a step back and say "wait, what about God?"

or how about "I can't breathe without you"?

I used to just blindly sing along with the verses and think they were awesome, but now that I have children I wonder is it what I want them to learn?

Do I want them to place all their love and trust in another fallible human that is bound to disappoint them, or do I want them to give that adoration to God alone?

Yes I believe in love and devotion and faithfulness, but where do you draw the line?

When does it become a form of tantric idolatry where you make the couple into a form of god and goddess worship?

Society teaches that it is the coming together of a man and woman that makes a baby, but we should remind our kids and ourselves it is not humans that make life but GOD who breathes the spirit of life into each living being.

Without the soul, the body is just dying flesh. why is God forgotten so often in the world as we go about our day to day lives?

Do people pray silent prayers? Do people pray at all?

I don't know I remember a time when I placed my hope and trust in human relationships instead of looking to God and my relationship with Him. I was miserable but I bought into all the love songs, searching for a soul mate instead of searching for God.

so when do love songs step over the line from healthy human loving relationship into idolatry?

The only kind of love songs I listen to are ones written by Christians...there's some cute ones out there :) one I really like is "One in a Million" by Run Kid Run. :) And then there's "God gave me you" by Dave Barnes...I can't think of others....but they're both love songs, and they don't totally praise their spouse, they just say how glad God gave them that person, or how they're glad that that person is their one in a million, they couldn't imagine being with someone else, etc.

I couldn't begin to name all the crazy ones.

But I have found one decent love song out their called "Replay." My problem with it? The artist calls the girl "Shawty" which I'm not a huge fan of. But other than that the song is clean...in one line it says that he's done stuff he's never done before, he's cooking stuff she likes for her and stuff which is sorta cute.

Society has tried to remove God from their lives, and as a result they have been trying desperately to replace that gap of love and affection by overestimating other small things. Relationships do become idolatry when the source of love and happiness becomes the spouse and when all gratefulness is given to beliefs like destiny, fate, etc. God bless

If anyone thinks secular love songs are bad, they should try listening to secular rap lyrics sometime.
