Do you mix only with those whom you like?
6 years ago, I met a couple whom I disliked.
I was new in the church and after the service, people were fellowshipping and I was talking to a brother in Christ. Then a lady came forward and introduced herself and her husband. I felt an air of arrogance from both and I did not like it. He said hello and nothing more and remained aloof. She chatted a bit more. The moment another sister came to join us, I took that opportunity to excuse myself and leave.
Why did I leave
- I felt uncomfortable & I did not like them
- They were arrogant & aloof
- They were not my type
Well!! How judgemental I was! How I myself was arrogant! Yuk
I was acting based on my feelings, my likes, my wants & my needs. What a wretched I was! But thanks be to God who opened my eyes.
Anyway, that very night, while in prayer, God convicted my heart about my attitude towards that couple. God impressed upon my heart that I should not look at them through my eyes or through my feelings but I am to look at them through Christ.
The following week, I made a decision that if I saw them again in church, I would approach them. Well, God made sure that they did come to church.
After the service, I went up to them and said Hello Tim, Hello Trini, how are you today? Trini started talking but Tim was very reserved. This time, I did not run away. I stayed with them and others came to join us.
The following week I did the same thing and little by little Tim started to talk.
We soon became friends and we started visiting each other now and again. We became a blessing to each other. Tim and Trini went through a bad patch with some brothers and sisters in Christ and we (my husband & I) were there to support them and comfort them. They too became a blessing to us by helping us with Spanish and German which we were learning as he was a professor of spanish, german, english and russian.
If I had ignored the conviction in my heart, I would have stopped them being blessed by God through us and stopped ourselves being blessed by God through them.
Through this, I am learning not to look at people through my eyes but through God's eyes. It's not what I want but its what God wants!
Question:
Do you run away from others that you don’t feel comfortable with or dislike?
Have you had similar experiences like that? Or are you in a situation like that now and God is speaking to you?
