I think though it is necessary to follow Jesus' teachings if we are to have eternal life. I agree with OP that it doesn't seem to be Jesus' teaching that eternal life is as simple as "believing in him" given what it says in Matthew 7. I take believing in Jesus as believing in his full revelation as the Messiah which includes believing he was given his words by God to speak which necessitates that we follow his teachings.

Consider what Jesus says here in John 8 (the same gospel as John 3, where Jesus says all those who believe in him will have eternal life):

24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
25 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

I agree, there is a profound difference.

17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.
18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. Lev 19:17-18

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself:

You might want to reconsider who needs to be circumcised.

Circumcision was the law placed upon Abram and his seed for perpetual generations. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. Gen 17:12

Seeing you are bought for a price according to Paul, Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of them all who are heirs to the promise ... Rom 4:16

Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. Rom 13:1-2
The Law places demands on people but gives them no power to obey. It's not because the law is too hard, it because the hearts of sinners are too hard. The purpose of the law is to prove to sinners that they can't keep it. Then the sinner is led to Christ, who gives the repentant sinner a nature that is able to obey God, provided that the sinner chooses to depend on the life of Christ that dwells within. The Law does its job and fades away, except for those who feel obliged to put grace under law.

Believers are new creations who operate on a new principle, the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus. Living according to the Spirit is pleasing to God. Living according to the Law is not.

Natural Israel r still under that covenant of the law .

No they're not. The old covenant was worn out and old nearly 2000 years ago when this was written

In that he said, A new covenant, he has made the first old. Now that which is worn out and grown old is ready to disappear. Hebrews 8:13

We don't keep worn out things to use later in life; we throw them out. Likewise, God hasn't keep a worn out, obsolete covenant around for nearly 2000 years; he threw it out after making a new covenant with them that never grows old. They either take it, or leave it; they have no standing in another covenant that became worn out and old, and was discarded.

Sorry , should have made myself clear , they believe they r still under the law , to them it isn't dead , they still live in it .

If the gentiles were not under the law of God then why do you think he destroyed them with a flood?
We r talking about the mosaic law , given by God to Moses , not the basic law of right and wrong .

If the gentiles were not under the law of God then why do you think he destroyed them with a flood?
God didn't just destroy the gentiles , there was no such thing as gentiles , God destroyed everyone in the flood apart from Noah and his family . A person doesn't have to know that something is right in the eyes of God in order to choose to do it , a person doesn't have to know something is wrong in God's eyes in order to choose to do it . A person doesn't even have to have heard of God to choose one thing or another .

I think we can take from Paul's example that it is no longer necessary to follow the law, since he did not always follow it when spending time with people. He writes in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 that he changed his behavior depending on who he was spending time with, in order that he might win some. When he was spending time with those "not under the law" he did not follow it. When he was spending time with those "under the law" he observed it. He writes that he himself is not under the law, though this is not present in every translation.

1 Corinthians 9:19-23 NIV

19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
In Matthew 4:15-23, Jesus began his ministry with the Gospel message to repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand, which was a light to the Gentiles, and the Law of God was how his audience knew what sin is, so repenting from our disobedience to it is a central part of the Gospel of the Kingdom/Grace, which Paul also taught based on the Law of God (Acts 14:21-22, 20:24-25, 28:23). If 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 had referred to Paul breaking the Law of God in order to spread the Gospel calling for repentance from breaking the Law of God, then that would have been like cutting off the branch that he was sitting on, but rather he was speaking about giving up his rights in order to meet people where they were at.

Indeed, the Bible frequently connects our belief in God with our obedience to Him because that is the way to believe in Him. In Psalm 119:142, the Law of God is truth, and in John 8:31-36, it is the transgression of the Law of God that puts us into bondage while the truth sets us free. In Revelation 14:12, those who kept faith in Jesus are the same as those who kept God’s commandments.

So , do u realise there was no forgiveness under the law ? If your wife or hubby commited adultery , u were not allowed , NOT ALLOWED , to forgive them and move on together . The offender had to b stoned , if u didn't falicitate this , if u hid this or tried to prevent it from happening , u would b stoned with them ! This is a very important point ; there was no forgiveness under the law . Jesus is all about forgiveness . We need to understand this .

It is contradictory to follow God’s Word made flesh instead of God’s Word.

Did you mean it is contradictory to follow Jesus instead of Moses?
Indeed, it is contradictory to follow God instead of what God has instructed. The God who gave the law to Moses also sent Jesus as the promised seed to bless us by turning us from our wickedness in disobedience to it.

But someone can follow what God said at one time that contradicts what he said at another time. For example, physical circumcision is a requirement of the law, but now it is regarded as nothing in God's eyes. In this case, if you follow Moses instead of Christ, you will be disobedient.

When I was watching the Ten Commandments. There was the scene of the Golden Calf. Moses came down from Mount Horeb after receiving the Ten Commandments he witnessed the Israelites worshipping the calf made out of pure gold. Moses called them, "Blasphemers" and "Idolators". Then Moses said, "There is no freedom without the law." Moses also said, "Who is on the Lord's side." The Ten Commandments is a great movie telling the story of Moses and the Israelites Exodus out of the land of Egypt. May God bless you all.

Jesus loves me...Jesus loves me.. this I know." NO that does not happen allot but.. that voice.. If I may? We do not know how much He loves us no matter how much we think we do.

So this law.. Vassal what about the NT and what He said there? I notice you didn't touch that as others did why ? Just asking :) For me it explains this.

Jesus was sent to the Jews only.

Did Jesus give us a new commandment and a new covenant, a covenant of grace?

The law was given to natural Israel , physical descendants of Jacob , the law was not given to gentiles , gentiles r not and have never been under the law . Natural Israel r still under that covenant of the law . We Christians r in the new covenant of grace , through Jesus Christ . It really is that simple .
Check out who Ruth was , she was a non Israelite, and followed God , became a relative of King David and eventually Jesus the seed of David . In the linage of the Messiah a non Jew ! See if it’s so ?

I highly recommend reading the book of Ruth . Here is what she said to Naomi . For wherever you go , I will go ; And where ever you lodge , I will lodge ; Your people shall be my people, And your God my God . … v 15 for your daughter in law , who loves you , who is better than seven sons … v And there is a son born to Naomi . And they called his name Obed , He is the father of Jesse, the father of David …
Read the whole book and see how God blesses obedient committed people , Jew or Gentile .

A few more places in the Old T seem to be aimed at Gentiles like Isaiah 55 and more so 56 . It’s a picture of the gentiles being grafted in as wild branches into the Israel being the original root . A picture of God whom really does love the world always has , he does not change . But holiness is required , not strange gods that most gentiles follow . Israel was to be a light unto the world , and that’s what Jesus did successfully be the light to the world . To the Jew first then Gentiles . He came into his own but they received him not . Except for a small remnant. A few thoughts .

You quoted the verses I was referring to, thanks Yahshua.

To join the old covenant of Mt Sinai you need to be living in Israel.

You must be living with the Jews and you also need to be circumcised.

That is what the Lord spoke and we will not contradict what He said, will we Yeshua.
Amen, we will not. We're going to take this one piece at a time.

You quoted the verses I was referring to, thanks Yahshua.

To join the old covenant of Mt Sinai you need to be living in Israel.

Exodus 12:49
49 There shall be one law for the native and for the stranger who sojourns among you.”

Numbers 15:16
16 One law and one rule shall be for you and for the stranger who sojourns with you.”

1. Do the passages say there will be one law for those "who live in Israel" or one law for "you" (i.e., the native)? They weren't in Israel yet when these were given. Why were they punished at Horeb (the Mount of God, outside of Israel) if these are only for when one lives in Israel?

No. A covenant was made that applies to them wherever they go.

That is what the Lord spoke through Moses, and we will not contradict what He said.

2. I asked are you a wild branch grafted in, or are you not? There's a specific reason why I asked this. A wild branch grafted in - as explained by Paul - IS NOT a stranger anymore but is described as those who were ONCE STRANGERS BUT NO LONGER.

Romans 11:17
17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

Ephesians 2:19
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

That is what the Lord spoke through Paul, and we will not contradict what He said.

3. You also said, "You also need to be circumcised."

Romans 2:29
But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

And how does one circumcise their heart? Well, they were told at the mount.

Deuteronomy 30:6
“Moreover, the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul, so that you may live.

Which brings us full circle. That is what the Lord spoke, and we will not contradict what He said.

- If you are a gentile believer, you are circumcised when you love God with all your heart and soul

- If you are circumcised, you are no longer a stranger, but a Jew inwardly and part of the commonwealth of Israel

- If you are part of the commonwealth, there is one law for you to obey regardless of where you are.

This is why Paul says the passage I shared that you overlooked in your replies...

Romans 2:12,14
All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.

14 Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.

That is what the Lord spoke, and we will not contradict what He said, right Inquisitor?

----

It's a false premise to insinuate that gentile believers somehow have a different relationship with the Almighty and the Messiah than those native, such is what lends false support to the notion that there is a different set of rules to follow than natives. So now that we've established that the gentile believer is a Jew by faith and that one law applies to them, next we address "what law"?

The people were commanded never to add to or take away from the law provided...but you know who can add to and take away from the law provided? The Original Lawgiver, the one who actually wrote them. So let's see which ones He removed and which ones He added.

1 John 2:8
On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because
the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining.

Here's the fuller context.

1 John 2:3-8
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.

8 Then again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

The context starts by saying "if you love God, you keep his commandments" and then adds a new commandment, which isn't really new because it was given at the beginning: Love your brother. It's a "new" command because the darkness of it has passed, not because it was something completely different given. As you say...

The true light and not that dull lamp of the law.

The dull lamp said; but you shall love your neighbor as yourself

The true light is shining now and for ever more.
...and when a shade is removed from a lamp, does its intensity increase or decrease? So likewise, is the law of God now more strict or less strict?

John 13:34
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you
also love one another.

4. Did the Messiah add to or take away from the commandments when he said the passages above^? Let's see...

Luke 18:18-23
And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ' Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’”

21 And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.”

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

If we apply the context from 1 John 2:3-8, this young ruler already loved God (because loving God means obeying His commandments; the ones He gave at Horeb), but the ruler lacked love for his neighbor and faith in the Messiah. The Messiah didn't take away any of the commandments that we're expected to be followed, but added to them.

You see, we can preach mini sermons like...

That's the fulfillment, we don't try to love others as we love ourselves but agape love towards
everyone. That agape love is poured into our hearts and that love is produced by the Holy Spirit.
It's not from us.
...which sounds great, but without knowing/teaching HOW God said to love in practice, Christians are frequently seduced by counterfeit spirits that pretend to be the Holy Spirit and that define love in their own way. If the spirit in you does not even WANT to obey the commandments - setting aside for the moment whether one can or not - then that's another spirit because the same Spirit sent to guide us is Who wrote the commandments.

Matthew 5:18-20
For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or one tittle shall in any wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled.

19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

20 For I say unto you that unless your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

Revelation 14:12
Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that (1) keep the commandments of God, and (2) the faith of Jesus.

But someone can follow what God said at one time that contradicts what he said at another time.
God's laws are not arbitrarily subject to change as if tomorrow it might be righteous to commit adultery or sinful to be a doer of charity, but that they teach us how to embody His eternal character traits. God's righteousness is eternal (Psalm 119:142), therefore all of God's righteousness laws are also eternal (Psalm 119:160), and if the way to embody God's righteousness were to ever change, then God's righteousness would not be eternal.

In Deuteronomy 13, the way that God instructed to determine that someone is a false prophet is if they speak against obeying His law, so if you you think that the Apostles were servants of God, then you should be opposed to interpreting them as speaking against obeying it, but if you think that they should be interpreted as speaking against obeying it, then you should be opposed to considering them to be servants of God, but either way followers of Christ should follow his example of obedience to it.

For example, physical circumcision is a requirement of the law, but now it is regarded as nothing in God's eyes.
While Paul said that circumcision has no value and that what matters is obeying the commandments of God (1 Corinthians 7:19), he also said that circumcision has much value in every way (Romans 3:1-2) and that circumcision conditional has value if we obey the Law of God (Romans 2:25), so circumcision has never had any inherent value but rather its value is entirely derived from whether we obey the Law of God. Someone being physically circumcised is a sign of them having a circumcised heart, which is evident by their obedience to the Law of God, so it only has value insofar as what it is a sign of is true.

In this case, if you follow Moses instead of Christ, you will be disobedient.
It is contradictory to think that we can be disobedient to God's Word made flesh by obeying God's Word.
