Doing their first works over is a good thing according to the letters to the church in Revelation but how does one return to their first love? By making Jesus front and center in their lives.

  • People Driven by Pure Zeal without deep, Relational Knowledge often use Their faith as a Hammer. They become rigid, judgmental, and focused on rules rather than compassion.
  • Loving the "Idea" of God: It is very easy to fall in love with a Religious identity, a political stance, or the emotional high of a community. However, loving the culture surrounding Faith is Not the Same as knowing the Heart of who God is.!
  • Arrogance Over Humility: True knowledge of something vast and divine usually humbles a man. Pure Zeal, on the other hand, frequently breeds a dangerous certainty that makes people unteachable.

Zeal isn't always bad. We do read of Paul saying that before he met Jesus on the Damascus road, he had been zealous for the traditions of his fathers. But he wrote of good zeal, too:

(Gal 4:18 NKJV) But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you.

To fully grasp Paul's message, it helps to examine the surrounding verse dynamics:
  • The Manipulation of False Teachers: In the preceding verse (Galatians 4:17), Paul Warns that False Teachers (the Judaizers) "Zealously court you, but for No good". They used Flattery and intense attention to isolate the Galatians and make the b
  • Believers Dependent on Them.
  • Healthy vs. Unhealthy Zeal: Paul does not condemn zeal itself. He clarifies that enthusiasm, eagerness, and passion are excellent traits—Provided They are directed toward a Noble, Godly Purpose.
  • The Test of Absence: The phrase "Not only when I am present with you" Targets a common flesh man flaw. It is easy to Act righteously, study scripture, and stay on fire for God when a pastor, mentor, or parent is Watching. True maturity means keeping that same spiritual Fire when you are Completely on Your Own.
