An old poem of unknown authorship expresses our wistful longing for nobility.

I have three tame ducks in my back yard,
Who wallow in the mud, and try real hard
To get their share and even more
of the overflowing backyard store.

They're fairly content with the task they're at
Of eating and sleeping and getting fat.
But when the wild ducks fly by
In a streaming line across the sky,
They cast a wishful and quizzical eye
And flap their wings and attempt to fly.

I think my soul is a tame old duck
Wallowing around in the barnyard muck,
It's fat and lazy with useless wings
But, once in awhile when the north wind sings
And the wild ducks hurtle overhead
It remembers something lost and almost dead,
And it casts a wistful eye
And flaps its wings and tries to fly.

It's fairly content with the state that it's in
But it isn't the duck that it might have been!

I read twice your poem about Duck Wings,
I used Google Translate to search words
I didn't or don't understand.

I still have difficulties to understand in fact.
If you want, can you resume your text,
in simple words, if you want.
--------------------------------------------------

Even if I'm not sure to understand,
I'll tell what I understood.
Finally, I can't understand,
I was simply curious to understand the poem.

I was simply curious to understand the poem.

The poem speaks to (essentially) the sad condition (or emotion) of our souls if we do not dare (risk) to let them freely answer the call of God.

The poem compares our souls to the disappointed plight (or condition) of fat, lazy, ducks at our back door who will never be all they were originally meant to be..........

because they accepted living a "small" part of the life that was available to them.

The ducks "played it safe." So do we (sometimes), and thus lose the ability to FLY as true ducks (souls) are meant to FLY.

I'm really trying the possible as I can do to get it!
I love the poem you posted and thanks
to take the time to explain it to me.
Yet, I'm not sure again but it's such a beautiful poem.
But I liked the poem!

Don't be mad at me please,
isn't that I'm stubborn
it just that my English isn't at point.

I am not mad, at all. I could not be. I am honored you want to know better what the poem means.

Please try to say what you need to know........ with each line of the poem. And I will try to explain the words.

I'll tell you by lines what I want to know
or to understand, but later I'm busy now...
I'll be back with questions in one hour like.

Advise, I can do a lot of mistakes.
At least, I wanna learn!
----------------------------------------
This poem, no doubt it's nostalgic!
Nostalgic,
like a souvenir that can't get off on your mind.
-----------------------------------------------------
Duck are present on the poem!
They are the central of the poem.
They pass their times in the mud
hardly to live like.
-------------------------------------------
They enjoy at the same time
by doing nothing more than to eat,
to sleep, to chilling out like.
----------------------------------------
At some point,
I don't know why,
they flew across a stream
and get caught by something.
--------------------------------------
This poem compares these ducks
with us, our souls,
ducks have one last chance to be better.
Anyway, it's a like not a metaphor but a lesson
to learn on.

Sorry I took so long to answer.

You are correct...... but there is more.

There are two different groups of ducks

The "backyard" (tame, domestic) ducks are one group.
The wild, free, adventurous, brave ducks are a second group.

The "backyard" ducks do not understand how they have become complacent..... UNTIL they hear the wild ducks flying in the sky. Then they, also, remember some deep emotion inside them. An emotion almost forgotten.

They do not know why, but they also try to fly.

It is too late. They are no longer "wild". They have lost the freedom of flying. They must, now, forever live in the mud. Never to fly again.
********
The author of the poem feels sad. Because he understands that he has become the same as those ducks in his backyard. His souls is, no more, free.
