His body wasn't broken. He had already died before the Roman soldiers came by to break the legs of anyone on a cross who had not died. Breaking the legs assured then that they would die quickly because they would not be able to lift up their bodies and thus cause asphyxiation.

The English word "broken" is an editorial insertion, i.e. it's not actually in the
Greek text. The NIV, NAS, NLT, 2011 Catholic, RSV, and the ESV all omit it.

I don't know why translators think they have to pencil words into the Bible
but I sure wish they wouldn't.
