why is editing limited to one minute after posting? Can this be changed?
First: Howdy and welcome to the forum.

Second: The edit limit is five minutes.

Third: This is to prevent people from playing tricks. Back in the day rude people would post rude things to get people mad. Then they would go back and delete those rude things after people were mad. Then they would pretend they never said those rude things.

Fourth: No, this will never be changed. Oncefallen, the local admin, was quite definite about that.

Thank you.

I have no way of timing the limit.

You know when you quote and respond like I am doing now, the original quote is captured, so there is a permanent record of what was originally said. This way you can have your cake and eat it too.

Meaning it is possible to retain a permanent record of the OP... and leave the forum open to change.

That is unfortunate.

I think it is five minutes.
Best to proof read before posting if possible.
It's not about proof reading it's about being able to add a comment to a longer post, that may tie a larger point with another.

I am not exactly sure what you mean, but until you hit "Post reply" it will stay however you have set up, and it will auto save as well.

When you make a post and go back and look at it, it tells you how long it has been since you made it. After it says "5 minutes ago," you will not be able to edit.

Yeah, back in the day I used that a lot, for exactly that reason. But trolls would still use the trick, and then claim that people edited their post in the quote to make them look bad.
That is unfortunate.
*shrug
This entire forum and the chat room that is adjacent are pretty much private property. We are all guests in RoboOp's online home. If you don't like the color of the wall you can ask him to change it, but if he really likes the color he will not change it. If you just can't stand that color and it won't be changed, there's only one thing to do about it...

If you have another additional thought just make another post, there's not rule about that. I think you can only post maybe 30 seconds immediately after your first post or something like that.

I try to proofread the spellings on my posts, and if I make a mistake and omit something or have already posted it and want to make a correction, but it's too late, I will just clarify in the next post.

The rule is fine, I know in some other forums when others have 'corrected' my own posts and haven't told me its weird to read something I remember writing but it's been abridged somehow.

I mean if its something you regret posting and want removed, just tell the mods.

That is an excellent way of verifying the 5 min time lock out, but it is a poor way of trying to determine that there is a 5 minute lock out. what am I supposed to do, try editing my post every 5 seconds to see when the lock out occurs?

So? Trolls are going to troll wether or not you have a 5 minute lock out or not. Plus why would you be willing to invest so much into a conversation with a person who clearly has no integrity? Is this not an example of throwing pearls before swine?

If you just can't stand that color and it won't be changed, there's only one thing to do about it...
Needlessly belligerent comments like this are in fact another example of pearls before swine. As there is no need to be so offended by my question/suggestion. Allow me to demonstrate how one is as a christian supposed to deal with trolls/needlessly aggressive people..

By allowing you the last word in this discussion if your pride/ego demands it.

But no one else can see the post till you reply correct?

So let's say I post a thought sourced from scripture, and the person I am speaking with asks for a citation. Easy enough to provide that person with a citation.. But then someone else responds and asks for a citation, then some one else doubts the authenticity of my interpretation.

Would it not simply be easier to go back to the original offending post and make a one correction, rather than having to make multiple? Say there are 1/2 a dozen different instances where different people want clarity. Do I now write 6 similar explanations , but personalized to the 6 different people? and post it 6 more times? Or do I cut and paste the one answer and just post that 6 more times?

Pretty sure ths has already happened several times here. As someone made a post and the immediately made a follow up post with some random scripture, but did not address it to anyone, nor did they tie it to a specific point. I had no idea if they where speaking to me, or someone else or if it was just an in general thought you wanted to some how add.

Yes this happens.. part and parcel of using an online format for discussion, I suppose.

With trolls/needlessly aggressive people, you can ignore them, or report them if they being offensive...

If you are making an OP, and it's in BDF, make sure you have your citations, scripture references ready or at hand when posting a thought. BDF demands it. Because people are going to look it up in their Bibles, it's handy for readers to see it in the post. Make sure you put the bible version you are reading as well.

I myself default to KJV as its the version I read and most people seem to know it.

Otherwise, have fun and hope you have some fruitful discussions on here.

Again, the situation I described is not one of preparation or spell checking. It is about the ability to be flexiable if the need arises. I have experienced and seen other experience a similar situation where the point made in the op is clear and supported, but for whatever reason the people responding to the OP, take the conversation off in a different direction. A direction that could easily be remedied with a simple edit. or an added line of text somewhere in the middle of the message.

sorry can't help you there, unless you direct us to the thread that had that problem

I'm not a mod so have no power to edit other peoples posts or remove them. You have to take that up with @Oncefallen or @RoboOp

People derail threads all the time, don't always read the previous pages, some threads are fast moving. If its your original thread, then you can kind of direct it back to OP, as most people posting in it will read the FIRST opening post and reply to it and not necessarily follow the end of the discussion. But others will carry on discussing and replying to the latest post.

This is just the way forums on here roll. You get used to it.
We don't have the kind of embedded "I replied to this thread' that is kind of like a reddit scroll, with various branches. BTW I wouldn't recommend reddit, why too many doomscrollers there.

Well, I mean if it is a super long post, and you think you might want to edit, best thing to do is save it before posting so that you can continue to polish it until it's just how you want it.
Otherwise, after you post, if you want to add, clarify or make changes you'll just have to quote it so people know what you're referencing and go about that way.

but for whatever reason the people responding to the OP, take the conversation off in a different direction.
Ohhhh...
that never happens around here
(that's said in a silly tone, while trying not to laugh. Because it happens ALL THE TIME, especially in the silly threads)

. A direction that could easily be remedied with a simple edit. or an added line of text somewhere in the middle of the message. Do you mean an edit like this? You see, this is why there is a 5 minute lock window. No one, not you or another user can go back to your original post to change it. And here, quoting you, I can add or take away as much as I want, but if you follow the link back to the original quote you will see that it's not affected, and that is because of that 5 minute edit window.

I mean, I get it. Going back to edit your original posting makes sense in a way.
Lord knows how many times I've posted something that comes out TOTALLY WRONG
and ops! Too late to fix it, now the whole world can see my (one of many) blunders  but...
if it matters that much to me I just have to quote myself and re- explain what was meant by it.
Annoying at times, sure, funny at times, you bet!
Humbling... sometimes.
Besides, if this was set up so anyone could go back to a former post and make changes at any old time, well then there would be A LOT of confusion going on in the posted replies that follow.
Not only that, but we'd have to keep up with all the posts we've already read and scroll back going
 "Gee, I wonder if they changed anything in what they said?"
😵‍💫 What a headache that would become.

I don't know how many times I might edit even a single sentence and then notice something wrong, like an entire word being omitted, after entering "post reply" and I read like a cavewoman typing with a wooden club. So, I've learned to press through my incessant perfectionism and just keep on keeping on.
