As a father with a child with disabilities this brook my heart this should be national news!
Gage is a 5 year old autistic boy. He has attended his local elementary school with his brother since he was 3. He is smart and sweet. He can read, spell, add and use a computer. He learned these things at home. He is in kindergarten, but spends most of his day in a pre-school program with eight other 3 to 6 year old autistic children and two pre-school peers. Gage's kindergarten teacher is not adequately supported and is not an autism specialist. Apparently it is not her job to teach Gage the curriculum because she is not his teacher of record. The autism specialist has been on sick leave since early December and is not coming back to school. This leaves Gage in a class full of pre-schoolers for most of the day with a well meaning and smart long term sub who is not an autism specialist. Gage is not being taught the curriculum. Last trimester, Gage's brother got straight A's. Gage didn't even get a report card. Gage's new "teacher of record" teaches early childhood preschoolers in another classroom. Gage is not being prepared for anything but an institution. Gage deserves better.
