Jon 1:1 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
Jon 1:2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
Nineveh was a city of Assyria and Jonah was familiar with the prophesy that Assyria would conquer Israel. Well, Jonah did not want to be a part of saving the city that was going to take his people captive, so he ran from GOD.
Isa 8:7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, eventhe king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks:
Isa 8:8 And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reachevento the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.
Now, Jonah bought a ticket on a boat to get out of town fast. But GOD brought a great tempest upon the boat. The boat was about to sink when the shipmaster found Jonah sleeping in the side of the boat and asked him why he was sleeping when everyone is about to die.
The people of the ship decided to cast lots to see if they could figure out why this evil was brought upon them. The lot fell on Jonah. Then Jonah told them that GOD was doing this because of him.
After alot of praying and a little logical reasoning, it was decided to throw Jonah overboard.
GOD prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah and Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights. I'm sure you already know the parallel to the death and resurrection of JESUS!
Jonah was doing a lot of praying while he was in the belly of the fish, and GOD made the fish to throw Jonah out onto the shore of Nineveh.
Now, the people of Nineveh worshipped a fish god. So, needless to say, when they saw Jonah get thrown out onto the shore by a giant fish, they were ready to listen to anything he had to say.
Within three days of preaching, all of Nineveh, and the king of Assyria repented in sack cloth and ashes as well as fasted by order of the king and had no food or drink. So, GOD repented of HIS intentions to overthrow Nineveh.
So, you see, GOD does do Covert Operations. And this one is my favorite!
