PARASHA: “Yitro” (Jethro) EXODUS 18:1-20:26

We see in this parashah a lot of wisdom on the part of Moshe and Yitro, his father-in-law. First, we learn that Moshe had sent his wife and children back to stay with their father and grandfather. I believe that, for safekeeping, when one sees danger, it is wise to care for one's family, as Moshe did. His wife and children might have been in danger, the Egyptians might have retaliated, might have kidnapped his wife and children, or killed them, so Moshe took precaution, which is a good thing. This is what all fathers and husbands must do. Protect their families when they sense danger is near.

The second piece of wisdom comes from Yitro. He is a man of experience, so he says, “Moshe, what are you doing to these people?” Hey, you are only one man, and a few million of them? Come on, dude, get wiser, this isn't a one-man deal here, no such things as “lone-rangers” in ministry, even the “Lone-Ranger” was not alone, he had “Tonto”. Ministry is to be shared with other believers; that is why the Ruach Ha Kodesh has given the Spiritual gifts, to be shared, to minister to others, by many, not just one. The rabbi cannot do it alone, nor can the pastor. The rabbi needs his co-workers, and so does the pastor; if not, they are going to run themselves ragged. This is called “pastor/rabbi Burn-out”

Another thing to point out, and it directs us to a question. The scripture says that Moshe sat in judgment of the people and made known the ordinances of God. But…Moshe and the people had not received the Torah yet. That came afterward. So, if Moshe hadn’t received the commandments yet, how did he know the ordinances of God with which to judge the people?

Two possibilities. This event might have happened after receiving the Torah at Mt. Sinai. Another possibility is that God gave Moses a preview of the Law and ordinances with which to judge the people before receiving the Law at Mt. Sinai. It might have been during the time that Moshe was sent back to Egypt that God revealed his laws and statutes to him personally through visions or dreams. Remember that God spoke to Moshe as one man speaks to another. These are just possibilities; then on Sinai, they were given on stone tablets and written down on parchment papers or on lamb skins. From the “Oral Torah to the Written Torah.”

This is the parashah of the “Ten Mitzvoth,” the “Ten Commandments,” but before the giving of these, YHVH presents the deal to the people, kind of like when the bridegroom presents himself to the bride. These are beautiful words;

” Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself, therefore IF you harken unto my voice and keep my covenant, THEN ye shall be my own treasure from among all peoples; for all the earth is mine, and you shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation” (19:4-6)

It is all conditional, like all contracts and covenants, we see the “IF” and “THEN”. He says that He bore Israel on eagles' wings. An eagle will carry her young on her wings to protect them from harm. So did YHVH. He brought Israel through the Sea on dry land, and brought them nigh unto Har Sinai. Now, they have to decide whether they will accept YHVH as their one and only God. And obey HIS words?

It is like asking the bride to accept the groom as her only husband, provider, and loving ruler, (not tyrant) BUT…even though Israel broke the covenant many times, YHVH has remained faithful and we are HIS HOLY PEOPLE, his ELECT, whether we were born and raised in Israel or from the nations, doesn't matter, we are HIS because we have accepted HIS sacrifice in YESHUA our “Goel” (Redeemer), and we choose the follow his Torah, his LIVING Torah.

The HE lays out the first 10 of the 613 commandments, which generalize, one can say “all” of the Torah: We need to realize that the first ten were given directly by Adonai to his people, HIS voice to HIS people, the other 603 were given to the people THROUGH Moshe, but still, they are all GOD’s commandments. Moshe simply did not make them up.

”ANOCHI YHVH ELOHEIHA” ( I AM ADONAI YOUR GOD) with the I AM emphasized, one can say “Ani” (I) or Anochi (I really AM) He is saying, I am who I have claimed to be, the God who took you out of Egypt and brought you here, I am ready to be your God, so if that is the case, there can only be ONE God in your life, that is ME, I don't want statues of me, that what the Egyptians did, so, don't do as they did, (It took one day to take Israel out of Egypt, but 40 years to take Egypt out of Israel, if you get the meaning). Don't bow down and worship other gods, that will NOT be accepted. It is interesting to see that the words “Egyptians” and “Egypt” is the same in Hebrew, it is the word “Mitzraim”.

Also, these words "Your God" and "took you out" (Eloheiha) and (Motziteha) are written in the singular, yet at the same time, plural. God is speaking to the "ONE Nation of Israel, the ONE people united as ONE (Echad), yet every individual is being spoken to. Yeshua died for each one of us, yet we are all part of one race, the Human race.

When Israel crossed the Red Sea, the “Egyptians” were drowned in the sea, yet “Egypt” followed Israel still, in the manner of “mindset” “philosophy”, “influence”. Today, when we reject the ways of the world and come to “Yeshua,” there are still “world-ways” one tends to follow, sometimes we do things even without thinking, which reminds us of the “ways of the world” (evil things).

Yet we see today, even though we don't make or bow down to silver, gold, wooden statues that symbolize who God is, or TRY to symbolize who he is, sorry guys, they didn't have cameras back then to take pictures, many bow down and consider more important things like; football, soccer, money, sex, TV, fast cars, work, you name it, if these come before our worship and service to our God YHVH, then those things ARE OUR gods!! put them in their proper places, lest YHVH take them from us by force!!

THOU SHALT NOT TAKE THE NAME OF YHVH IN VAIN.... What is being said here? When many take oaths, promises, many times the name of GOD is used, like “I swear to God I'll pay you back next week.” Well, if next week rolls around and you pay back what you owe, you will have HONORED the NAME of GOD, yet if you don't, you will have taken the NAME of God in vain! It is better not to make promises and use God's name; we can always say “I'll do my best to pay you back as soon as I am able” and leave it at that. One can take the name of the LORD thy GOD in vain without words; our mere actions and comportment speak of God and who He is. If we behave unlike born-again believers, like a lost person, then, our actions are "taking the name of YHVH in vain."

REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEP IT HOLY....The Sabbath is, and always will be, Saturday; it was never changed to Sunday. Nothing wrong with going to church on Sunday, to me, it is a “double blessing” to worship Adonai two days straight. Yes, the early believers met on the first day of the week (Sunday) to break bread and have fellowship. This was “Havdalah”: the close of the Sabbath and the welcome of the new week. This was a “custom” that they did, and we still do; it was not a CHANGE of sabbaths. Yeshua resurrected on the first day of the week, Baruch HaShem!!(Praise the LORD) great! And we can also worship on Sundays at local churches, but it was NEVER a change of sabbaths. I think we can learn from God's WORD through God's appointed ministers, pastors, and rabbis on both Saturdays and Sundays. On both the Sabbath day and the Day of Resurrection (The 7th day and on the 8th day as well), Sunday is often referred to as the 8th day. The "beginning of the new week.

HONOR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER...This really needs no explanation; it is common sense to honor our parents and respect them because of WHO they are, and what they have done for us. My mom and dad used to say to me; “We went without many times to give you the things that you have today” Our parents give us love, raise us, hopefully, to love God, ( I can't speak for all of you readers, since everyone is different) But, if our parents gave us love and taught us about God and Yeshua/Jesus, then, we ought to do the same for our kids. Honoring father and mother does not mean sticking them in a rest home when they are old and going off and forgetting about them, doesn't work like that. Were your parents rotten to you? Did they mistreat you? Well, love them anyway! It is what Yeshua taught.

THOU SHALT NOT MURDER, THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, THOU SHALT NOT STEAL.....ever wonder why those three commandments are together? If one commits adultery, sleeps with another man's wife or husband, one is “murdering” a marital relationship, and “stealing” what does not belong to you, being another person's spouse. Yeshua explains it even better, He said if you only “think” of sleeping, having sex with another person's wife or husband, that person has already committed adultery in his or her mind, it gets pretty intense if you look at it that way. “Murder” does NOT include going to war and fighting for your nation; you are DEFENDING your family and homeland.

“Stealing?” That can be a two or three-page explanation. If you come back late from lunch, you are “stealing” time from your employer; if you do not do your very best, then you are “stealing” from your employer, your own ability, and usefulness. Can a man rob God? Malachi says, “Yes,” God speaking through his prophet, “You have ROBBED me of your tithes and offerings.” One can rob from God when we do not utilize our spiritual gifts, or waste them on worldly things.

DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS.... This is another lengthy subject, but with simple words, always tell the truth, and do not hide the truth from others. To know that some thieves are planning to rob your neighbor, and you remain silent and do not alert your neighbor, is if you opened your neighbor's door for the thieves; you are being false. To tell a half-truth is to be false. Yes, the truth at times can be costly and painful, but being false can be worse.

DO NOT COVET.... Be satisfied with what you have, the job you have, the bank account you have, with the car you have, with the wife or husband you have...Coveting can lead to worse crimes. Look at Aachen, who coveted the Babylonian tunic and gold from Jericho; it cost him his life, and his family's lives too. If you want more than you have already, take it to the LORD in prayer, if the LORD sees that there is nothing wrong with giving you a little more, HE will give it to you in HIS perfect time. World War II was started when Hitler and the Emperor of Japan "coveted" other lands, and it resulted in their own destruction and their countries' ruin.

Thank you again, for sharing the insight given you about the love of God for us all given through Son as risen where new life begins in Father's Spirit and truth, the Holy Spirit John 4:23-24

as I see it all got broken down to:
What is the greatest command of all commands?
Answered to love God, Jesus's Father above everything else. That is the greatest of all commands. Do that willingly and begin to see new in love and mercy to all too.
Love your posts Brother in Yashuah, Jesus unto Adonai, God our Father where John 10:10b is answered and revealed to us to see what true contentment is in all things good or bad happening.
How to still rejoice when bad things happen as Paul did, when in Jail and the Jail help came to believe God in risen Son too. By the love and mercy Paul stood up continued praising God Father and Son while in troubles happening to him.
Can we see to do as Paul, who was Saul before named Paul saw Stephan willingly die to flesh. Stephan was stoned to death. Stephan in death happening to him continued in praise and worship.
Now if I saw that, I would be perplexed, would't anyone else too?
Then that road to Damascus. Where Risen Jesus appeared to him. Wow, woe is me, I dedcided to hear Paul's letters in context and trust Yahweh to teach me truth over all the errors in the Epistles people have not fathomed yet
God loves us all y'all, otherwise that cross would not have ever happened, you think? I now know, thank you Father and Son a sWon (One)

Its all about God and His love for us...

James 2:8
If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

Amen

“For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”

What about what the LORD says in Genesis Ch 26 V 5 . If we read the old Testament carefully we can c the law in action long before it was given to Moses .

Rev 3:22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

He that hath an ear to hear what God said.

Cain thought it was a small thing to offer fruit to God but Abel offered an animal (a blood offering).

When we do things the way we think is right, we will make mistakes. We need to listen to God in every way. Obey God not man or the traditions of men. Test all to the Bible and beware of the master liar, he has deceived many and caused many to not hear the simple truth.

Joh 8:44 .....When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

We are told.. Ecc 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

When folks quote the scripture---

If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

no one every attempts to explain exactly HOW we are to love God and love our neighbour, --how is that done?

If you fulfil the law -- exactly how is that accomplished?

I have never found anyone on this blog that has explained what is it that we can or must do -- that fulfils the Law,
where is the list that shows how we are to love God and man?

Plus love is another very vague word, my quess, if 100 were asked to define love, there would be 150 definitions.

Yes God's Word does have a list explaining exactly how that is accomplished.

no one every attempts to explain exactly HOW we are to love God and love our neighbour, --how is that done?

It tells us plainly: treat others like we want to be treated and don't work harm toward yourself or others.

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Matthew 7:12
Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Romans 13:10
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Galatians 5:14

Then I want everyone to keep the 10 Commandments --

Why do folks work so hard to void the only Law that is good of everyone on earth????

The fruits of The Spirit give adequate guidance if you're atall unsure
May The Spirit of Pure Love fill your heart and guide your mind and guard your tongue

paul claims the law came 430 years after the promise made to Abraham in genesis 12 and 22.

The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ.

What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise.

Why, then, was the law given at all?

It was added because of transgressions

until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come.
( christ )

The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator.”

Genesis Ch 21 V 1-13 , especially verse 13 : And ALSO ( implying as well as ) of the son of the bond woman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed .
So Ishmael , Abraham's seed , will ALSO become a nation , as well as Isaac , verse 10 : for the son of this bondwoman , shall not be heir with my son .
Two seeds , two nations .

And …. Two covenants ….lets see if Paul addresses this

“For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, ( ishmael ) the other by a freewoman. ( Isaac )

But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; ( ishmael was sarias idea )

but he of the freewoman was by promise. ( Isaac was gods promise)

Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants;

the one from the mount Sinai,
( Ten Commandments ) which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

( two Jerusalems )

But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

..Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭4:22-31‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Ishmael ( covenant from Sinai ) was cast out of Abraham’s house and is not part of the inheritance of Abraham. Paul’s sinply reading the scriptire

“Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭4:30‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.

But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.”

‭‭Genesis‬ ‭17:18-21‬ ‭KJV

after isaac was born

“Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: ( covenant from Sinai ) for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭21:10, 12-

paups not speaking literally but allegorically ishmael represents the covenant made from Sinai . Isaac represents the covenant made by Christ Jesus when he came , the gospel it was promised to Abraham before the law or Israel even existed

“And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.”( gen 12:1-5)
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The law given from Sinai was added 430 years later when Moses arrives in scripture . After Jacob is born and becomes israel and has his children . Then they go into Egypt and receive the law many years after when god delivers them out of Egypt he then made the covenant from Sinai with them which is the law
and they broke it and so

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt;

which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband
unto them, saith the LORD:”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭31:31-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

ishmael was cast out and isn’t an hier of Abraham which is what the gospel is about

What about what the LORD says in Genesis Ch 26 V 5 . If we read the old Testament carefully we can c the law in action long before it was given to Moses .

Here were some of the commandments God gave to Abraham:

Genesis 12 “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you."
So...
"Go from your country..."
"(Go from) your people..."
"(Go from) your father’s household..."
"(Go to) the land I will show you."

That's 4 commandments. None of which are of the 10 given at Sinai. Does such a pattern continue in the New Testament? Sure.

Here is a commandment God gave to Saul (Paul):
Acts 9: “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
So...
"Arise..."
"Go into the city..."
"Await further instructions (paraphrased)"

3 more commandments from God, none of which are of the 10 given at Sinai.

Amen

“But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:

But Abraham operated By faith

By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: for he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11:8-10, 13, 16‬ ‭

God says it Himself in Genesis 26 V 5 . I'm not being dogmatic I'm just quoting the Bible .
Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek .
Jacob sold himself to Laban for seven years years before this was written in the law Deuteronomy ch 15 V 12-14 .

Dogmatic? Neither am I.
The commandments of God are simply what He tells us to do. The New Testament has numerous examples of God commanding His people. These are His commandments. The ones given at Sinai were for the people gathered there, not for their fathers who came before them.

To your point about Abraham and Melchizedek: the tithes given were not according to Sinai law whereby only the Levites received tithes. Melchizedek was not a Levite.
