1 Corinthians 13:13
13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
Faith:
-A prerequisite for answered prayers:
Matthew 21:22
22“And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.”
-Comes from exposure to the word of God:
Romans 10:17
17“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
-Part of receiving the gift of salvation:
Ephesians 2:8-9
8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast.
-Evidence of our salvation:
Hebrews 11:1
1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
-Necessary to please God:
Hebrews 11:6
6“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
Hope:
-Assurance of what we cannot see:
Romans 8:24-25
24For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? 25But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
-Comes from the scriptures:
Romans 15:4
4For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
-The Holy Spirit is our helper:
Romans 15:13
13“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”
-Based on the promises of God who does not lie:
Hebrews 6:18-120
18That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: 19Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; 20Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Love:
-Nothing else matters without love:
1 Corinthians 13:1-2
1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
-No greater commandment:
Mark 12:29-31
29And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: 30And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
-Love comes from God, God is love:
1 John 4:7-9
7Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
-No fear in perfect love:
1 John 4:18
18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
-Fear comes from doubt:
Matthew 14:25-31
25And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
“Faith, hope, and love are closely related. We can have full assurance of the things we cannot see and that is faith, but it is hope in the very specific promises of the Bible. While faith and hope are vital to our walk as Children of God, they are also the result of perfect love. Fear comes from doubt and perfect love drives out fear. So, if we are not fearing, we also have perfect faith and hope in God who is himself love." - Runningman
