you heard of this?
I think Thomas Merton was the first one to really write about this in detail. Though he may have been inspired by books like The Cloud of Unknowing.
OK. I will try to define.
False Self... this is/are the masks we use to survive in the world. Important in the first half of our lives especially. Ambition and status are hallmarks. We try to make some impact on the world. This helps us survive in the world.
The true self becomes more important in the second half of our our lives. We start reflecting. Our soul and or spirit start to mature and we care less about status and ambition. Our "real" self , the part that belongs to God starts to blossom. We care less what others think and more what God thinks....
( sorry you might be better to check wiki on this for a better explanation).
God understands we need to attend to worldly things in the first half of our life. The second half is a chance to grow more reflective and prayerful.

My problem was or is that I didn't really forge a successful career in the first half of my life/ Therefore my reflecting time (which is now) is one more of regret. Still I try to stay in the spirit. Hang in there more faith.

Yet some people can spend their whole life in a prayerful, active and reflective mode at the same time. Exceptions to the rule perhaps?

ive always been reflective by nature. and not always in constructive way. I admire people who are active rather than too reflective. Gotta respect those holy people who help the disadvantaged in society for no financial reward. Volunteers. That's true self not needing validation from God or other people. Because it is God working in us.

You meant Our soul starts to mature. The spirit gives us life, our soul or mind reflects our own self desire until we are born again then our soul reflects fruit of the SPIRIT for we are HIS workmanship created In Christ unto good works that we walk In them.

I hear you @morefaithrequired .
I understand the reflective nature in us and our introspective attitude of examining our life as we have lived here!
Especially as we put years behind us and see that much we " thought was important" wasnt!

Ecc.3 1-8 .A time for every thing in the order of a life.........even Solomon was reflective in His aging years.

Now we press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.....Philippians 3:14.

Blessings of love my friend in Jesus!

Dare i suggest that maturity can teach us to move past pettiness and getting caught up in intellectualism. Splitting hairs over trivial points.
as i read a post this morning, its about paring back instead of adding on. too much theology just confuses us.
its just jesus and us. much as the Catholic church wants to be in on the act. two is a company 3 is a crowd?
