ESSEX, March 5, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Jill Recknell is mourning the loss of her grandson, despite the fact that he is alive and well. It’s just that, according to five-year-old Zach Avery and his parents, he’s not her grandson anymore. He’s her granddaughter.

Zach’s family, who live in England, says that he was a normal boy up until last year, when he became obsessed with the cartoon character Dora the Explorer and started dressing in girl’s clothing.
Zach before becoming a "girl."

“He just turned round to me one day and said, ‘Mummy, I’m a girl,’” Theresa Avery, Zach’s mother, told the Daily Mail, when the family went public last month with Zach’s story. “I assumed he was just going through a phase and left it at that. But then it got serious and he would become upset if anyone referred to him as a boy.”

After a psychologist diagnosed him with “Gender Identity Disorder,” the family has asked everyone to treat him as a girl.

Theresa and her husband Darren say Zach’s school has been “really supportive.” They have told his fellow classmates that their son has the body of a boy, but the brain of a girl. The school created gender-neutral lavatories for him, and the family hopes he will be able to use the staff toilets when he gets older.

But Recknell, Zach’s maternal grandmother, says she cannot get on board.

“I’d rather see him kicking a football than parading in a pink dress,” she told People. “He was born a boy. It says so on his birth certificate.”

The situation, she says, has made many of the normally joyous aspects of being a grandparent painful for her.

“Grandmothers love seeing photos of their grandchildren growing up but I could never bear to look at a picture of Zach pushing a pram or cuddling a Barbie,” Recknell told the news service.

Gift-giving occasions are particularly difficult, she confided: “I could never bring myself to send a doll or girl’s clothing – it would seem so wrong.”

“The whole situation is heartbreaking for me to be honest and has left me in tears,” added the grandmother of seven.

Recknell is not the only family member with reservations. Her son, Jay, says that his nephew’s transformation has divided the family and raised concerns about Zach’s parent’s decision to go public.

According to the Daily Mail, the Averys are now negotiating with a tabloid newspaper to sell Zach’s story to them.

Zach’s story comes amidst reports that the number of young children being labeled “transgendered” is on the rise, with clinics even catering to such children and providing “treatment” that can involve being administered puberty-blocking drugs to stop the onset of puberty, and subsequent “hormone therapy” to help the child look like the opposite sex.

In one famous case reported on last year, a seven-year-old boy who now says he is a girl was allowed to join the Girl Scouts.

Too many people worrying about hurting feelings and being pc and not enough being a witness in the public.

should've taken the kid to a Bible-believing church and had him prayed over as soon as he said "Mummy, I'm a girl." would've nipped it in the bud right then and there.

this is what happens when we refuse to treat sin as sin, people. it grows, it kills dreams and destroys lives.

I honestly would have took out the 2x4. That would have took care of it. Instead. That kids going to have to deal with that issue for the rest of his life, because of his useless parents .

I'm just curious if anyone that commented yet is transgender. I don't think you are because if so I highly doubt you'd be making comments as you did. Some things aren't as simple as say a prayer and it's gone.

You know I want to think you're joking, but I can't. You should never joke about beating your child. I don't care what they've done he/she will always be your son/daughter. I see people all the time in threads about homosexuality say that children are impressionable. Well it works both ways. Show them abuse and they'll learn abuse. Show them hate and they learn hate. I can honestly say I'm glad you're not this child's parent. If anything you'd cause him to live his life in denial. Experience depression, self-abuse, and maybe even go for the ultimate and attempt suicide. Something is different in the mind of someone who is transgender than someone who is not. I don't see you say your going to pull out the 2x4 cause your son has some other mental problem. How about next time you think before you click that post button? Your words could have a real negative effect on someone.

i would have said..."you what, dear?"
"you're funny *smile - hug - hair tousle*....okay - hockey starts in 10 minutes - let's go son"
"good boy"

Discipline is not abuse. There is a difference .

If anything, you don't discipline, a child and raise them in the Lord. Then the result can be drugs, abuse, sexual sin, and the list gos on.
Your thoughts can harm the lives of children. Because, it does not protect them, its a false protection..

My words or right. I don't care if it offends people. Either people wise up and listen to God, or perhaps people believe they are too good for God & God's words? .

I will stick with God . Do not spare the rod, and spoil the child. Everything in its proper place. Yes 2x4 I stand by what I say.

If you're serious about hitting a kid with a 2x4, do you have kids? or are in a position to discipline them? I am a bit afraid for there safety to be quiet honest with you, so that's why I ask.

The rod was was used to guide the sheep along the right path, not beat the stuffing out of them. That said, loving discipline is necessary. Sometimes it's physical but there's a huge difference between physical abuse and loving discipline. 2x4's and belts are abusive.

I think the 2x4 was figurative more than it was literal.

In my old stomping grounds, expressions involving 2x4's and child discipline were very common. Nobody, to my knowledge, actually used a 2x4 on a child.

Lol I grew up in the South I know all about discipline. Believe me I was spanked. My dad used his hand, his belt, or if it was really bad it was a wooden paddle. Granted he never spanked as hard when he used the paddle, but it got the point across. I've been spanked with a switch from a tree before by my grandmother. If anything the switch hurts the worst. What irritated me is you're saying you'd figuratively or literally(it really doesn't matter which) go get a 2x4 to spank your child because he was confused about his gender. I'm sorry, but that's crazy and I don't see how that will solve anything. Not everything can be solved with a good beating.

Not being raised in a Christian home leads to drugs and sexual sin. Really? Where are your statistics for that or is that based solely on your own opinion? I don't know if you've read any of my posts before, but I grew up in a great Christian home, but I still turned out gay.

Well I don't think you have a very good Christian perspective about things. You don't care about the feelings of others and how your words may negatively affect them? That doesn't seem like the right way to live your life, but to each his own.

Well I hate to say this about anyone, but I hope you never have kids. To think you're going to spank your child for being confused. That is absolutely outrageous and IS CHILD ABUSE. That is NOT discipline and you really need to get your priorities in check. Also, please buy a dictionary and look up the word discipline.

i agree he was wrong. but doing sexual activities outside natural marriage is also wrong. unless you are not a Christian though
