so speaking of potentially impolite words, who considers 'shat' to be impolite? show of hands.
you see, 'shat' is past tense 'sh--'.meaning it couldbe considered bad., or just meeh.
But that is how you pronounce cat in French. "Un chat" (a cat) is how it is spelled, but "un shat" is how it is pronounced.

This caused some amusement in our French one class.

oh that is fun. but, it is not neccesarily a bad word itself, just that its present tense counterpart is. right?

That depends on what the cat is doing at present. If the cat is pushing a glass off the table, that is a very bad word.

speaking of which, you know how some people say 'pardon my french' after saying something impolite?
so... do French people say 'pardon my american'? it would make sense.
