This story is tragic and saddening.
Please do not take my comments to follow as insensitive... But to those who automatically want guns banned because they are used incorrectly. It would be like banning pain killers because some abuse them.
this is classic misuse of firearms. Gun safety is so important a firearm should never be pointed at in target that is not known with complete certainty.
My view point comes from a unique perspective. From a young age I learned to hunt and fish. Mostly duck hunting. The reason had nothing to do with sport. I was born and raised in a remote part of the state of Alaska. Simply put the fish and ducks are a staple to our diet and 100% nessesary to live here. My point is we all have firearms and in the 15 years of my life I have never known anyone injured by one. I have known a man who injured himself greatly with a splitting axe. It was an accident and caused by misuse. Still there is no reason to promote banning axes.
Back to the story, my heart breaks for the mother. And my prayers go out to bother and the daughter.
Gun tragedies are as tragic as any tragedy...

Very fishy or very stupid.
According to the report the shot was fired after the door was opened. This smells an awful lot like a domestic dispute with her daughter gone bad. Another report says this:
Police said she came to the door with “a baseball bat in her left hand and a .22-caliber pistol in her right hand,” intending to kill Lane, 39, who reportedly told her he planned to kill her. Police were actually interviewing Lane at the time, who was in the emergency room with a head injury caused by Bing, who had hit him with a gun.
Honestly, she expected the guy to return to her house after she pistol whipped him? And if she's in fear for her life, why didn't she call 911 after pistol whipping the guy? She should have been answering police questions at about that time (she threatened to use lethal force against someone, and assaulted him with a deadly weapon), not still at home alone.
And a woman who has the fine motor skills to pistol whip a man without discharging a firearm accidentally shoots her daughter in the chest after opening the front door (which in and of itself is impressive when she had a bat in her other hand).
There was only one Ritter. No, I won't discuss the reason other than to say that he violated site rules in chat. No, I didn't hit the button but I would have had I caught it first. Yes, I'm sad to see him go.

Thanks for replying. No, I won't press you for details. It's just a shock when people you know and respect and seem quite responsible are banned. It's only happened a couple times but it's still unpleasant.
