I've seen a lot of different fathering styles, and was wondering, what's yours?

Are you a stay at home dad?

Do you feed and change the baby more than once every couple days (or weeks...or years...)?

Do you let the Mom deal with most of the discipline?

How much time during the day would you say you spend with the kids (and would their mom agree)?

Are you the 'enforcer of rules'?

Do you help with homework most often, or does their mom?

I got curious because I'm a stay-at-home mom of a 7 month-old, and my husband doesn't do much of the feeding or changing (he does some), but he puts the baby to bed and reads to him whenever he's home early enough. So I thought it would be neat to hear how other dads do the dad thing :)

p.s. Moms can answer too-how do your husbands/boyfriends help you out?

MissCris, It's a busy time for you; and I wish you all the strength of grace at this time in the life of your young family.

My eldest (son) is 33 now, so I'm a little past the nappy stage, but, yeah, it was a learning curve. I was even more self-concerned than most young men, but I guess I got tuned up along the way. I'd be a PERfect husband/father/helper now.

This is a time when your young husband could easily feel isolated. There is nothing more important the welfare of your lovely little one, but see how you have needs. He does too. This is just a very busy, hard time for you. But, be strong, the rewards of the years ahead will more than make up for it.

My father used to get himself ready for church (these were the days when my mum had three children under 5) and he'd sit in the car and honk the horn.

Was that good style, MissChris?

Any dads out there better than that? Let's hear.

Are you a stay at home dad? I have been and there is no shame in that my wife owned her own business before we met so I couldn't ask her to just throw it away that would be selfish.

Do you feed and change the baby more than once every couple days (or weeks...or years...)?I did when they got old enough that they were on formula but for the most part that was my wifes bag as she breast fed all our children and I think they are much healthier for it.

Do you let the Mom deal with most of the discipline? It fell to me more than my wife as she is much more liberal than I so ergo I was the discipline guy for the most part but when the lioness roared everyone usually stopped in their tracks. LOL

How much time during the day would you say you spend with the kids (and would their mom agree)? Depended on their age but I would say my wife spent more time with the kids than I and yes she would agree with that. LOL

Are you the 'enforcer of rules'? Most definitely

Do you help with homework most often, or does their mom? 50/50

In my opinion children respond better to the female gender as a rule because they talk softer and are generally more loving than men are though this isn't always the case.

Hahaha your dad sounds very charming

Chris,
I have beena foster parent 3 times and have helped 2 orphans and been a youth minister. We have never had a newborn so Ihave not helped with babies. I do however feel very strong paternal obligations to the children. There is a Jewish proverb that says "If a father does not teach his children a trade, he is teaching them to be a thief". I feel it is my responsibility to prepare children to live on their own. Spiritual instruction, (Like memorizing scriptures, 10 commandments etc,) and practical instructions to prepare them for the future. I also feel that it is my responsibiity for the child's discipline, primarily in the 7 to teenage years. C urrently, i am the primary father figure for my neice and nephew, and also for an orphan.I like to pray God's blessing upon children. These are my views, I hope that they are helful to you

Thanks for the responses :)

I think it's neat to hear how other people interact with their families, and it's particularly awesome when fathers take an active role in raising the kiddos.

...even if that 'active role' is sitting in the car honking the horn LOL

Muskokaman, you're right, there is absolutely no shame in being a stay-at-home dad. Being with the kids all day every day is a pretty tough job sometimes :)

Likewise, being a good foster parent is super important- it gives a bit of stability and love to young lives who otherwise have none. I always thought that if I couldn't have children, I'd definitely be a foster parent. So thank you for what you've done for our youth :)

I'm in the same situation as you. I'm a stay at home mummy to a 7 nearly 8 month baby girl. My partner helps out when he is in when she's awake but most of the time I do everything and I'm ok with that because he works 12-8 everyday (she's normally in her bed by the time he gets home). I wouldn't expect my partner to get up at nights as he has to work all day :D

I met my wife in Texas, her dad worked on the same power plant thad I did. We agree that her job was at home and my was makeing the money. I told her that her job at home was just as importance as my was and what ever I made was just as much hers as it was my. That's the way it always been. Three years later we had a son. We started going to church, but after awhile we got away from the church. We didn't raise our son in the church like we should have. We're paying for it now. When my son was nineteen my wife had a little girl, three years later she had a little boy. When My little girl was three I started back to church. I got a secound chance now and with the grace of God I'm going to bring them up through the church. I've been back in church now for five years. My wife won't go with me but I'm believing that God is going to save her. We've been married for thirty years next month. We think of each other before we do ourself. That's the key

MY SON LIVES WITH HIS MOTHER. BUT I HAVE BEEN VERY ACTIVE SINCE THE DAY HE WAS BORN. I WENT TO ALL THE SONOGRAM APPIONTMENTS. I WAS IN THE DELIVERY ROOM WITH HER. AND I LOVED CHANGING DIAPERS AND GIVING HIM A BATH. SHE WOULD PUT HIM TO SLEEP AT NIGHT BUT I WOULD WAKE UP WITH HIM IIN THE MORNING. I LOVE MY SON AND I ENJOY BEING A FATHER. SO DOING THOSE THINGS SUCH AS CHANGING DIAPERS WAS JUST PART OF THE BONDING EXPERIENCE AND I WOULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN IF I COULD. HE IS MY LIFE. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!

Well, my baby's father pretty much has nothing to do with her sadly.
My dad was amazing though. Always talking to us about God, told us stories, built forts with us, brushed our tangles our more gently than my mom lol He worked hard but always put his family before his job and God before all else. I was super blessed. :)

Well, it sounds like you get some help. I am the stay at home dad, and my wife changes diapers maybe once a week. I put the baby to bed and get up with her if needed. (she is almost two so this doesnt happen often anymore). I cook and clean and keep the house up, homeschool the older two and am the primary disciplinarian. I think I have a pretty good idea of how women felt fifty years ago. lol

There should not be any dads on here. There are plenty of sockets needing racheted, sinks needing fixed, garages needing cleaned, chairs to occupy, and naps to be had. There won't be any time left to be on CC. (naps are really long)
