The subject of free will is contentious issue and has been argued and discussed for years. So I'm going to exercise MY free will by deciding not to talk about Free Will in this post.

Instead I want to ask you all about recycling.

What's the point? Everyone tells me that if we don't recycle then we will kill the planet. Is God no match for a plastic bag? Are those plastic loops on four packs of beer like Kryptonite to God and his creation?

Where in the Bible can I find out about this major flaw in Gods design?

What's with the recycling threads lately???

I don't think a plastic bag is any match for God, but He does command us to be good stewards of the earth He gave us. IMHO, that includes recycling whatever I can.

The bible shows that we are to do what is good, and abstain from every form of evil.

Is recycling aluminium or plastic good to do? Yes it is so in a way then by recycling you are doing as the Lord commanded !!!

Also the bible says in James 4:17 that if you know something is good to do but refuse to do, to you it is sin.......

Its a hot topic for me because there is a new initiative in my area to recycle as much as possible so the local authority can avoid paying a massive fine.

I now spend my days washing my trash and organising it into little boxes, and complainging and moaning every second I do it.

On the other hand, you know how small our little country is in the UK. Compare that with the size of the massive countries who pump out all manner of wastes, recycling here in the UK is the equivalent of turning up at an earthquake site with a dustpan and brush!

I think recycling here in the US is much easier -- for me at least. We don't have to separate it out at all -- just rinse it out, throw it all together in a bin, then bring it to the dump with your trash.

Most trash services here simply pick it up curbside -- one can for trash, one can for recycling. Easy peezy.

Ugh, no such luck here. We have to wash it and separate it. And if there is a wrong item in the wrong box, then they won't collect ANY of it!

Now that rubbish is sat there for 8 hours until we get home from work, so you can imagine the mess on the streets when we get home and its been blown around everywhere.

Every Tuesday my street is like a scene from Mad Max 2 cos someone always gets it wrong.

Tell that to the seal with the plastic bag around its head lol

In Australia, we have recycling pick up every two weeks. Every house is supplied with a large recycling bin and a truck dumps takes the rubbish every two weeks. You can chuck anything into it and they will take it unless non recyclables were sticking out the top, they don't check every bin , or any for that matter unless its obvious.

I'd say that the practice of recycling comes down to free will. Some choose to, some don't.

That's awesome! ;)

However, we should always cut up those plastic loops because when they're dumped in the ocean some species mistake them for jellyfish and eat those loops, then die because of it. They also get caught up on the snouts of dolphins and turtles and that spells doom as well. :)

We have dominion over the Earth, and that means we have responsibilities. But I love your OP.

Our inner cites are full of crime and poverty...folks are starving in the world and sin is growing and being made into law.

Sure recycle when you can, but don't think it matters to God when He hears the cry of the poor.

Gen. 1:28 God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

Might just be me, but killing animals because they don't know plastic and Styrofoam isn't good to eat seems to be the opposite of subduing the earth and ruling over the animals.

Might just be me, but it seems like Haiti went down hill once they used up all their wood without replenishing it.

Might just be me, but there is only so much aluminum and lithium to be mined, so why in the world do our children's children have to walk through all the used up ore forever without the use of a good old fashioned can to carry soup in or without a battery to power their needs.

Might be me, but it really does seem this verse covers it to -- Mark 12:30-31 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

God's not really big on the self-centeredness of not caring about anyone or anything, especially since he created it all. Kind of like drawing a mustache with a crayon on the Mona Lisa. Tacky and self-centered.

We were told we had to wash out recyclables too. The recycling companies told us that. And then there was a show on what happens to the recycles. Guess what? They have to sort and wash them carefully, so as not to damage the machine.

This left me with two questions.
1. Why am I washing it, if they're going to wash it again, and do an even better job than I do? (They sterilize. I do not.)
2. Is there a law that says I need to wash my trash? I've seen no law, so... one washing is good enough if they're going to sterilize.

Just sayin'. :D

I've seen the machines in the recycling plants where there's a magnet above to pull out the tins and fans on the side to blow out the paper. Yet I still have to separate it!

God commanded us to be good stewards of the earth, a job we have failed miserably at. Greed, corruption and assuming the earth has limitless resources are part of the problem.

Where we lived before, we took everything to the dump. There was quite a bit of recycling, and we did separate things, except for the true garbage that could not be recycled. My husband had a system figured out, and went every 3 or 4 months.

Now we are in a different province, in a small, beautiful city. No garburators allowed. Recyling of everything! Wash out those gucky cans, and try not to get cut on the edges. The green matter is recycled back into soil. When we filled our garden beds, we elected to pass on that composted soil, as the grass clippings are full of fertilizer and weed killers. And they come to the door weekly and pick up the various kinds of recycling bins. Amazing!

If anyone wants the Scriptures, I did a 15 page paper on this topic for Biblical ethics. It is on my computer, but I could fire it up and give the basics of what I found. And there really is a HUGE Christian movement to care for the earth these days.

What most annoys me about governmental decisions on recycling is what to pack groceries in. When I was young, they had strong paper bags. Then the environmentalist nuts said we were destroying trees. Duh now. And we were replacing them, too.

But the government made us go to chincy plastic bags. Woohoo! Now we have something made out of oil, which is much worse on the environment, doesn't disintegrate, and isn't recyclable. At one time, we could drop them back off at the grocery stores because they could recycle them. (We used to sit on a bench in front of the store that was made from those bags.) Now they don't do that.

So, once again, the government goes for what looks good, instead of what IS good!
