I think people make it harder than it really is. Work is not a major issue, and it is not a “proof”of anything.
How can you say you have faith in someone when you NEVER do anything the person suggests would be a good thing to,do, and are continually doing things which are against the person you claim you trust?
ie, if you really trust a person, your not just going to say it, Your actually going to do things they suggest,. And walk side by side with them.
That is the point James was making, he was not pointing to works in any matter only to stay a person who really trusts someone will not be hearers of the word and not doers. PERIOD

By the Faith of Jesus Christ, even we believed into Jesus Christ that we might be justified (made righteous) by the Faith of Christ. For we are dead nevertheless we live, yet not us but Christ liveth in us and the Life we now live in the flesh we live by the Faith of Christ. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. For we are one flesh.

it's interesting, James was writing to a situation where we know there were a lot of poor believers in need, and that, in a city where a lot of wealth and power was concentrated. he is chiding, giving three specific faults: telling the people he is writing to that they need to stop treating the rich like they are 'better' in any way, that they need to get off their bums and do good, and that they need to tame their tongues.
this is the context where he writes 'faith without works is dead' and his illustration of that argument is that words alone don't feed or clothe the hungry and destitute.
in two places he says doing one single thing would be a holistic solution: keeping what he calls explicitly "the law of our King" - love your neighbor - and taming the tongue, which he explains a letting our mouths produce only blessing and not cursing.
all James is saying is encouragement to his audience to love without dissimulation.
James' audience is the twelve tribes scattered abroad not Jewish Christians. There are no twelve tribes in the body of Christ, no Jew nor Gentile, but we are all one in Christ.
I will also add......God is the God of words "LOGOS" AND he inspired James to pen two words instead of one....note the difference in the following verbiage which gets overlooked and or just flat rejected....and explain the difference gramatically.....one is a "be" verb and shows state of being....the other is not a state of being but a comparison...

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. (Rom 4:4,5).
