For the folks who dont believe in tongues and interpretation - as heard from the Holy Spirit - here it is, in the Old Testament. I wondered why no one ever brings this up when discussing tongues, because tongues and the gift of interpretation of tongues is exactly what this is. If you have this gift, I hope this will encourage you to keep using it for the glory of God and with His fear. I urge those who oppose the gift to think twice what they call gibberish:

Daniel 5:25 And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
Daniel 5:26 This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.
Daniel 5:27 TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.
Daniel 5:28 PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

So the finger of God writes this on the wall in a tongue, and no man or magician is able to interpret, which they would have succeeded if the tongue was known to men, but their familiar spirits do not know what is in the mind of God. Only a prophet of GOD is able to say this. Daniel is called to interpret this unknown tongue, although the words might have been of Aramaic origin... but regardless. It's not an understood language sentence, it needs interpretation, and it's some language. When interpreted, it is prophecy. THAT, my friends, is interpretation of tongues.

Many dont understand these two gifts. Gift of tongues is not a gift of babbling, but a gift of hearing and speaking words of God in faith. Even though they might NOT be necessarily understood or known to man, at all.

In the same way the writing was written on the wall, a believer hears the words from the Holy Spirit in their heart and he speaks prayerfully. Just like the apostles received it on the Pentecost, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak through them even though they might not have understood. Of course, as apostle Paul instructs, we should pray for the gift of interpretation, which grows as we use the gift. Interpretation enables us to share the gift with others and prophecy to edify the church, as the words are spoken by the Spirit, so the tongues interpreted equals prophecy (1 Co 14:5; as we also see from this excellent example of Daniel).

This example is tremendous and worth of a bigger study, it speaks volumes about the gift and how it works. If you've ever wondered how someone can talk so much about one word when they interpret, or in contrary, "translate" a bigger portion of unknown tongue with few words, you see now that it can totally and Biblically happen during interpretation.
