Tongues are for our spiritual edification, if I read scripture correctly.
I strongly believe we should absolutely be sure of authenticity if we are to give control of our minds and speech over to another entity.

That is why I believe that only a relatively few people actually receive the Spiritual gift of tongues... scripturally, it's not for everyone, just as prophecy is not for everyone.... or any of the other gifts from the Spirit. The Spirit of God gives us what gifts we NEED to benefit the body of believers...

How can men know what to pray?… It’s impossible to know the will of God. Although we can try and do our best.

Isaiah 28:11-12 (KJV): “For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people… this is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest.”
 
• Romans 8:26 (KJV): “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be heard.


Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV):

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

Withe the TOTAL CONFUSION about the "Charisma" In the visible church these days, when a "Prophesy" comes forth, the chances that it REALLY IS a "Prophesy" aren't guaranteed. It may be the "Prophet's" personal religious, or theological opinion, and not from the holy spirit at all.

Several times when Iv'e spoken prophesy, another has told me that he had the same message, and he could confirm it. My wife received the SAME PROPHETIC MESSAGE weeks apart from two totally different individuals. THAT's when you KNOW you're on solid ground.

WHen I receive a "Personal PROPHESY" that requires the expendatur of resources, I file it in "Pending" and wait for confirmation. MOST "Prophesies" die in "Pending".

My prayer is that we all are at peace with a gift we won't always be able to prove it's authenticity. One tongue may be in another language as in Acts 2, or it may not. We are given comfort in this, I hope!

You will know the authenticity, Because your soul will feel refreshed and not weary.

Brothers and sisters ask yourself this… where is the revival in the church?..
Hint… It’s definitely not the American church.

I'm pretty sure this is way out of context for this discussion. Simply because you find "stammering lips" somewhere in scripture does not mean it's referring to tongue-speaking... it could have been someone with a genuine speech impediment, like Moses.... I have not read that part of Isaiah to know what he is referencing, but I'm pretty sure it isn't speaking in tongues...

first off, climb down off that high horse.... I didn't accuse anyone of "faking it".... although I am certain that a large number of people are... when people need to be coached, or "trained" how to speak in tongues... it ain't real.
I believe that IF the Spirit gives a beliver the gift of tongues, it's for a reason.... a scriptural reason... it's not to "prove" that they have the Spirit... although that could be a result of it, if some sort of "sign" was needed. It is primarily for the personal edification of that believer... it's between them and God.

Again the purpose is in scripture and I’ll just leave it at that.

You are not alone with that opinion, not by a longshot. Enough so, the Lord himself gave us this assurance, ,

11Now which one of you fathers will his son ask for a fish, and instead of a fish, he will give him a snake? 12Or he will even ask for an egg, and his father will give him a scorpion? 13So if you, despite being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” Luke 11

Absolutely spot on there, and that's where I part with so much of my Pentecostal brethren. It most surely IS of the Lord's choosing. That in mind, let's not also forget, of the times common people received the HS in the New Testament such as in Acts 19, they all received the gift of tongues. Yet later, that same Apostle asked the reader, ''do all speak with tongues?'' Pentecostals of old, don't like to frequent that question.

Yes, I agree with this. But we should also be alert to influences that are not of the Spirit..... at all times, not just in tongues. Many times, believers want something so badly, they will "see" God's hand in a situation when it in reality is not God's doing, but our own.
This is seen many times in man/woman relationships.

I have told my experience with tongues a few times, perhaps once more is in order.
I was not raised in a charismatic type of church... my dad was an elder in another denomination, and we all went to worship services "every time the doors were open".... I was saved, and water baptized when I was about 10 yrs old. I did know what it was for...and what it meant.
When I was about 21 or 22, I became associated with a group of believers that were charismatic. I worshipped with them a few times, and was asked if I spoke in tongues... I said no, but it was something that interested me. They then proceded to instruct me in their beliefs, and told me that if I truly wanted tongues, the Spirit would grant it. I DID want it... I saw them all praying in tongues, and I thought that it would make my spiritual life better/deeper... we all prayed for it... about 8 or so of them surrounded me, and laid hands on me, in prayer... I was told, and believed, that all I had to do was want it, and pray for it, and I would receive... and, nothing. They told me to, in private, simply open my mouth and start making sounds, and "it would come"... nothing.
I actually felt unworthy... that the Spirit had not given me what I asked for...
Time passed, and I kept reading about it... and I have realized that, scripturally, not every believer will experience that gift... just as every believer will not experience prophecy, or knowledge, or healing..... these are all individual gifts given to us as the Spirit sees the need.

Telling folks that ALL believers should have ALL the gifts is simply not scriptural, and it can be damaging to immature believers.

Whoa, :) ''Pending'' Ha! Not too bad at all. Especially considering how continued search for confirmation could turn into doom for some ''A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” (Matthew 16:4)

When each of us is revived we will see "the church" revived, the "church" is the body of believers, not a place to camp out for an hour each week. Most as Jesus said will be walking in an outward form of godliness denying the power, and they are praying not as the Spirit gives utterance and guidance, but with their own mind as Jacko mentioned, that is the vast difference in today's "churches", the true believers, Spirit filled , are a small group and are being called out of all kindred's and tongues at this time.
