While writing and speaking in defense of the First Testament; one criticism comes up every time. It supposes that the God of the first Testament is angry and judgmental, and He has been replaced by the kind, loving, and gentle Yeshua.
This statement contradicts the very words of Christ himself. Jesus repeated made it very clear He could do nothing on his own, that he could only do the will of his Father. The allegation also contradicts the grace YHWH has consistently demonstrated from the very first act of creation; grace flowing uninterrupted until today. We know Jesus is the very Son of God and that He was sent by The Father. He was sent for revelation, redemption, and restoration. This sending is the ultimate act of grace.
The statement is also the ultimate hypocrisy. God delayed His chosen people from entering the promised land for four hundred years until the sin of the people become complete; yet another act of grace. I believe God has righteously judged very single soul and that He will continue to do so. (More on that below.) The final chapters of the Second Testament also portray Christ coming in the end times to avenge the earth. He first slays the armies of the nations with the sword of his mouth and then, “…treads the winepress of God’s wrath” until the blood of sinners fills the Jezreel Valley. That’s not preached much.
Lastly, but most important, the critical statement about God is founded on human values and standards, but not God’s. It is founded on the belief that what happens on earth is the ultimate standard of right and wrong, the ultimate reality. It assumes our reality is also God’s. We tug at God trying to pull Him down to our level. We do not know and can never understand God. We don’t know why we are here, where He is taking us or by what means he uses to accomplish His perfect goals. The First Testament explains that God’s righteousness far exceeds our own, His judgements are true, ours are human.
Yeshua told us we must accept His Father in Faith. There is no other way.
*With apologies to Jonathan Edwards
