It was a Friday in the month of April, some few days to the end of the semester. That bright afternoon, the sun raged furiously like it had a quarrel with the inhabitants of mother earth. My stomach churned violently that I could eat a whole Zebra! The situation was so terrible that I had little or nothing on me (financially). Most irritating was the bud of my taste, it wouldn't crave for a meal even though there was none.
Gradually my mouth began to water and my appetite grew larger by the second. Yes! I got it! It was the guava tree almost directly opposite my class room. My mind had hooked up with it. They must be ripe, juicy, succulent and ready to drop. Jack Robinson! I was under the tree. The guavas as I expected were ready to drop, so I used a stick on them to fasten the process.
Each time I waved the stick with momentum, leaves instead of fruits dropped. I tried severally till my conserved energy dried up. Of glaring hope was that the guavas were just a bit away from my head, the chronic hunger left me without strength to stretch and reach them with my hands.
As the saying goes, a hungry man is an angry man. As I sat under the tree, I became so angry that I wished I could cut it down. There and then, an idea set upon me: ‘at least if I can’t cut, I can curse’. On the verge of placing a curse, Jesus Christ came to mind, subsequently, the Fig tree. Then a low voice spoke to me: ‘that was how hungry Jesus was when he approached the fig tree. And that was how disappointed he was when he couldn’t get fruits too’. The voice continued, I only wanted you to learn a lesson. You don’t need to curse the tree, it already had borne fruits. The lesson of patience was what I wanted you to learn.
At that spot, I felt some kind of undefined joy. I was so happy that GOD could teach me a lesson. Without a pattern, my ravenous appetite was metabolized. With the energy generated, I left the tree and ate something else, though not satisfying.
As I got to my room, I lay on my bed sky-ward, giving praise to GOD. After a while, a friend came with so many guavas from the same tree and blessed me with them. Although the appetite was not as before, I ate them to the glory of GOD.
