Seems to me that I've devoted more thought and prayer to relationships and marriage this week than I have in a very long time. Maybe that's because I had my own healing to do. :) As I read through the threads and listen to people talk in the chat rooms about these things, my heart becomes very heavy. There are so many people who are lonely, scared and scarred. Not only from past relationships, but from concerns that they may never find the relationship they want/need. God (as always) said it best. "It is not good for man to be alone". Maybe for a season, but for a lifetime? I can't imagine that very many of us have been blessed with the gift of singleness. :)

When the subject of marriage comes up, isn't it tragic that most of the conversation (even among christians) revolves around divorce and/or abusive situations? Seems that we very rarely hear anyone speak highly of marriage or say positive things about their spouses. As I listen to these things and I look at the ages of some of the hearers/readers, it must be such a discouragement to them. Maybe even cause them to wonder if loving, godly relationships even exist anymore in a world and a people so marred by sin and brokeness.

Some find themselves where they are by choice. And live with those choices. But as I listen to/read the lines of pain, I don't see choices. I see/hear sorrow, helplessness and discouragement. Knowing that God collects our tears, I would imagine the vessel collecting the lost relationship tears must be constantly overflowing.

Our pastor preached on marriage last week. He said it was a subject he usually avoided and knew that many of his pastor friends avoided it too. For fear of offending. Maybe we're doing it wrong....

God created marriage. Marriage is holy. Marriage is good. Marriage is blessed. The Church must absolutely be pro-marriage. :)

But marriage is also tough. And sometimes it doesn't work out for whatever reason. Many are broken by it, or the loss of it. Many have it taken from them through no fault or will of their own. Even if they had a part in its downfall, do they hurt any less? Are they any less scarred? Do they have fewer regrets? Have you ever really seen anyone come out of a divorce feeling like a winner, even the person who wanted it? Seems to me that we need to be as compassionate as the Lord was to the woman at the well. Hate divorce? Absolutely. It's not God's plan and it HURTS people...everyone close to the situation is hurt. But unforgivable? Worthy of withholding compassion? Not if we are truly known by our love for one another. Or is that just me...

I appreciate these threads. Not for just the laughs, which, btw, often have a lot of pain behind them if you're paying attention. I appreciate them because people are here bariing their souls to others. That's cathartic. But consider how many people are reading the words posted here. Some of them may be at a crossroads with some very important decisions to make...life affecting decisions. Not only for themselves. My prayer is that whoever they may be, they benefit not only from the lessons hard learned, but by those of us who can honestly say, yes...true love DOES exist. Marriage CAN be good. Relationships CAN be strong. And they CAN be lasting. It still happens. But we have to do it God's way, not ours.

I've heard it said that it's better to want something you don't have than to have something you don't want. I wonder sometimes whether I will ever again have the sort of relationship with a man that I once had. Funny thing is, because I know the value of it, I can't imagine settling for less than that, no matter how long I have to wait on the Lord.

I didn't mean to write a book. Didn't even know I was going to post this tonight. Just sharing my heart. Maybe there's someone who needs to read it tonight. If that's you, then know you aren't reading this alone. The God of all creation is with you and He has amazing plans for you. Don't try and make your plans His plans. His plan is always better. It doesn't make the wait or the decision any easier maybe, but it sure will prevent having to worry about the cure down the road. God bless! :)

You are a good person Jullianna...and I appreciate you taking the time to write this out and share your heart.
I enjoy your ever-growing friendship, and I enjoy seeing such similiar values and interestes and other commonalities mirrored in someone else.
Just as God provides on the relationship side of things, he does on the friendship side of things too. I certainly glad he has with you. :)

Be blessed dear! :)

I suppose that is why I am still single. Having seen and known the truth, I can never go for something else, at least if I am honest with myself.

Your whole post was beautiful. Thank you so much for this :)

I personally think that when you know exactly who you are and exactly what you want it is a lot harder to meet someone who can meet your needs. Its just so much more specific now. Especially whe you are living for God and wanting that same quality in a mate. It just takes longer.

I do also think we have some personanl responsiblity in it too though. I have no choice but to ask myself occasioanlly, "Self! Are you being the best self you can be today?" We need to be the best representatives of God's love as possible and that will shine thru in all areas of our lives and draw that one nearer to us. We have to stay vigilant for their arrical and make sure we are ready when they do show up.

I like this reply. If we're growing as a person, then this is absolutely true. If, for example, I am still searching for the kind of girl I wanted when I was back in high school, then I have not progressed and grown. I thank God that He kept me from marrying any of the girls I wanted to marry when I was younger, because looking back on it, they didn't fit me then, and they definitely don't fit me now.

Sorry to those who are in their teens, but I didn't start to 'get it' until my mid 20's. It wasn't until then when I began to know myself well enough to think about finding a woman who would compliment me, rather than just one who would say yes.

Awesome post, Jullianna. I like what you wrote that the church MUST ABSOLUTELY be pro-marriage. Most churches these days aren't against marriage, but they aren't FOR them either. I went to a church that was pro-marriage, and it was a whole lot different in that regard. So many churches are non-offensive and lukewarm...and that's not good at all. Oftentimes staying neutral in something is much worse than picking a side and offending the other.

I totally agree Pooch. Neutral and Lukewarm churches drive me bananas.

I suppose I was in the opposite boat when I was in high school. I liked arguing with girls; that was kind of like my way of flirting. "Yes" made them boring to me. High school was a steep curve for me. But I suppose I've come a long way since then. :)

oh and btw, your posts are always amazing Mr Pooch.

Nuke, I really liked what you said about how we look for different things in a companion as we grow and change. That's probably why God has so many of us waiting--just think what would have happened if we had all gotten what we wanted when we were 18!!! So, maybe God knows it wouldn't be the right choice either if we got what we wanted right now as well. But, of course, there are no easy answers.

Jullianna, I really appreciated that you said you take in both the laughs... and the pain.

After all, the Bible tells us: "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." (Gal 6:2)

I too wonder if I'll ever have some things in life I once had, and it's tough, because God doesn't want us pining over the past, either. He tells us to let go because He wants to do new things.

I love reading the posts and stories people share here because in a small way, it helps me feel not so alone.

This is a very beautiful, well thought out post. Julianna, I have always enjoyed your light sided posts, and respected your serious, insightful ones, so while this one did touch me, it was not surprising you would write it.

So many times I have felt the same way about how marriage is so often spoken of. Negativity creeps in, if not about divorce, or abusive situations as you have mentioned, then just in general "downing" a spouse. Complaining, or making "jokes" (I " " jokes because they are NOT funny, if there is any underlining truth, or complaint within them) at the expense of a spouse..........wouldn't the time spent on such comments be better used in UP-lifting a spouse?? Making each other feel loved and needed, relied upon, trusted, and enjoyed for who they are??

There have been un-countable times within my day-to-day life here in Ohio, and within the chat rooms and forums here in CC, where when I talk of how wonderful my hubby is, or how much I value my marriage, I get "looks" or little comments, or plain old ignored, simply because others don't want to hear it! It is disappointing, but I will not let it discourage me, because I am not bragging upon myself or my accomplishments..I know I am blessed. I also know it would hurt my husband to do anything less than give him the uplifting and praise he so rightly deserves. He nor I are either one perfect..but we are perfect for each other.

Seoulsearch and NukePooch.....While I am sure you are right about looking for different things in a compainion as you grow and change, maybe you ARE looking for the same girl/guy you were looking for back then...but the grown up version!!!! I have been blessed with a wonderful marriage, with much growth from the beginning to now. 25 years and counting, we are not exactly who we were when we got married, BUT who we were back then, IS a part of who we are now. The growing we have done has been done together, and I am sure that makes a ton of difference too.

Thanks for the love, y'all. It's a little scary and draining when the Lord puts it on your heart to bare all like that. You do it, but then you sit back and hold your breath....
