I used to have one in elementary but he changed schools. I have some friends but not that close friend I can just call at any moments notice like most have. I'm an only child so it seems more lonely than you can imagine. I know it seems depressing however is a best friend at all mandatory. Or can I just worry about myself and get through life?

When I was your age I had zero friends and I was on my own and felt a bit of a recluse so I started attending a small church. I was very shy but even in that small church young people found me, literally tracking me down and dragging me into the college age group. I made a lot of great friends back then and fast forwarding into another large church so many friends you wouldn't believe.
I've been in at least a half a dozen weddings and best man in I believe three of them. To get to your point yes I had closer best friends but you need to realize circumstances change, best friends get married and suddenly you don't have a best friend anymore. They also move away.
My advice is get plugged into a college age group and be there for your Christian family because you are going to find many people that need you as much as you need them. Don't be afraid, we're all in this together.

Not having a long-term friendship doesn't have to be discouraging. Mine usually last 1-2 years until separation for one reason or another. But over time I've lost the sense of lacking something and instead I just enjoy the time I have with people while I have it.

This idea that most people have a best friend that they can and would call anytime and you're the only one left out, I don't think it's very accurate. I think the truth is that there are a lot of lonely people around. I would also say it's true that the first few years out of institutionalized school are some of the hardest since the natural social communities you've always had around you are often suddenly gone. And no one is organizing all those social events that used to be available.

Best advice I can give is keep getting out and doing stuff you enjoy (even if that's something like my going for walks in public places so I can pet everyone else's dogs) and look for local clubs or groups (or if you have the time and inclination maybe join a vacation trip) so that you can do those things together with other people. Also feel free to talk about your interests around here, the more you talk about things, the more chance you have of finding out that other people share your interests.

The older you get, less friends like you're describing, can be found.

I am a people person. I would go crazy without friends that catch me and the other way around. U can be my friend :)

I had a lot of friends when I was younger, and some of them are my friends still, but also I feel more like being independent in every aspect of life.

When my husband died, me and our daughter were left alone...durn...it still makes me crying thinking about it...even it was so many years ago....

Anyways...sorry...I'll be back later.

Don't know you from Eve, Ms. Susanna, but this broke my heart a bit. The past sneaks up on you, doesn't it? Shuffles around in the grass so you can't see it. Hides behind a song or a smell, then.... there it is. Clean and clear as a bell.

It was a glove one time that took my breath away. My dad cleaned fish out back at his cleaning station. That's what he called it, a cleaning station. He would wear one of those metal mesh butcher's glove and was no nonsense and precise wen it came to cleaning fish. Guts would fly.

Some time after he died I was out back at that same untouched station and saw a perfect bronze of my father's hand laying on the table top. The metal mesh butcher's glove caked with dried fish guts left a perfect caricature. So, the past slipped up on me that day, unannounced and it's draining but it's also fulfilling.

Fulfilling because maybe your husband left you a bronze of gold with that daughter of yours.

Anyhow, my heart went out to you just now and wanted you to know.
