My mom told me that if I don't study well in school and get good grades people will look down on me

Is this true
 
I would say; that they would think that you are not trying to apply yourself...grades are a reflection of what we think of our selves.
Unless you have a health or mental issue...you should get good grades. Now excellent grades are a different story.
If she is talking strait A's, and you are trieing your best and getting C's. Then it is mom we need to pray for...

As the others have said:
If you give off the impression your grades are low because you didn't try, people might think you are lazy (Companies will not look at the grades as such alone, but at your willingness to work hard to gain the skills needed).

If you try your best and just can't reach the B's and A's at least you know you tried, and people emplying you in the future will notice whether you are willing to work hard to learn or not.

I personally think it's more important that you can actually use what you've learned. But then again my parents are the type that think I should be getting all A, even though my average is in the B area...
 
Its not about getting good grades, but about what you do with your life. In my second last year in high school I became terribly lazy and my grades went down, but because I was good with computer stuff people looked up to me and some of them helped me start working hard again. If you set a good example in any one of the talents God has given you (including good grades), people will look up to you!

I like this. Allow me to take this another step; A person can get good grades and still be looked down upon.

Working good into a day isn't always an easy thing. And where it looks like we faltered, a biblical teaching speaks of putting your hands on the plow and do not look back.
 
It isn't about how well you do in school but how well you can apply what you have learned. However, if you plan to go to college it pays off to have a good high school GPA. This allows you to get into a college or university, then receive scholarships to help pay for college.
 
In the long run grades don't really mean that much. My parents always expected me to get A's and even when I would get an A- they would ask me where I could improve. Don't strive for a letter grade, strive to learn, try enjoying it and maybe your grades will improve. Sometimes parents have such high expectations because they love us and think that we can do better, when getting a C might be an amazing grade for someone. Don't be too hard on yourself, whatever you do in life the Lord will help you through it.

I don't judge people on their grades, if you think about it it's just a system of a person judging the work of another. Try your best and the grade you get may not be the best compared to the worlds standards, but it's your best. Be proud of it.

When it came to grades and school, this was my goal:
Colossians 3:23
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men

In home-schooling, we are taught to like learning, not get good grades just to "pass and forget about it" once it's over. When you really enjoy what you are doing, the good grades will come more naturally, and you will want to apply yourself. :)
School should never "end" really. The whole word can be a learning place for the rest of your life if you welcome a range of interests. Schools just provide the formal tools.

I am almost three times as old as you are, and my mother told me the same thing 50 years ago. But here is the secret. The people who think they are being "looked down upon" are actually looking down on themselves. Your parents aren't really worried about you; they are worried about what they will tell their friends. When you learn to see yourself as God sees you there is no more worry about "what people will think". You are His precious child. In his eyes, you are perfect just the way you are. No tweaking required.

The Apostle, Paul admonished us to "...do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,..." (Colossians 3:22-23, emphasis added) When we concentrate on pleasing God, and not on what people think of us, we are blessed with a peace of mind and heart that cannot be duplicated. Unfortunately, there will always be shallow people who judge us on our accomplishments, and parents who try to motivate their children with that notion. God's advice, "fuhgedaboudit".

I have realized that sometimes it's not others looking down upon me it's me looking down upon myself.

I don't believe I am doing the best I could be in school. I am too focused on my feelings instead of hard work.

I think I am at least wise enough to believe my mom is actually telling me to do better and not looking down upon me herself.

Just one more thing to add to so many wonderful replies!

Take time to recognize and identify the strengths (Gifts and talents) inside you, which God the Father has given to you! And develop it so that you can use it to enjoy the things you are doing and also be a blessing to others.

School, grades and academic performances are just tools to help you.
 
The sad part of your post is that your Mom, at that age, has to motivate you to even worry about good grades. Slothfulness is not part of the Christian personality. God doesn't reward "success", he rewards faithfulness. Give it your best in everything you do, whether it is work, study OR living. I am a former high school teacher, and I used to give this speech to every single class on the first day of the school year........in the Latin language, the word for "student" is "discipuli"....in the English, we get two words from that word......"disciple" and "discipline"....you'll never really be disciplined until you are a good student, and you'll NEVER be a good student unless you're disciplined....it's that simple, really.....gaps in your ability to learn subjects can easily be handled by mentors, tutors, etc., but only if you're disciplined enough to seek the help......and, above all, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me"....Phillipians 4:13 (ever wonder why Christ is a "which" and not a "who" in that verse?
 
Sounds like a pressure play from your mom to me. People use that all the time.
