I used to have an addiction to chocolate. I can go on a chocolate binge for a whole month, day after day. Then I would feel sick. Then when I feel better, I start scoffing on chocolate again and the cycle goes on.
I used to have an addiction to sex. Alone in my corner, I would gratify the desires of my flesh and then feel like filthy rags after. I would go in prayer and ask God to forgive me feeling remorse and shame and the cycle continues.
These were my idols because I loved it and I could not control myself to stop it. Many may feel in the same boat.
We need to practice self-control. Easier said than done!!
With a sincere heart, this is what I prayed
“Lord, Forgive me for my sinful nature. I alone cannot do it. I need you to give me the strength to overcome the desires of my flesh. I only want to do your will. Make my thoughts your thoughts and make my desires your desires. Help me to exercise self-control through the power of your Spirit. In Jesus name. amen”
I then made a firm decision that I was going to exercise self-control. The first thing I did was to get my chocolate bars and threw it into the bin. I stopped buying chocolate bars. It was hard
When my body started to feel the sexual urges I would put on christian worship music and I would start singing with the singer and I would spend an hour or so doing that. During this time, my body and my mind is just focused on God. After that I’m fine.
I did fall from time to time but I started disciplining my body to do the right thing before God.
Today, I can say I am set free from both idols and no longer need them. Not by my might but by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ.
I know what it is like to feel awful about yourself for gratifying the desires of the flesh.
Therefore, I urge you to remove yourself from the situation and start disciplining yourself. Don’t feel condemned but come to him. Don’t be discouraged but be encouraged because the Lord knows our weaknesses, but we can overcome all things in his strength. With a sincere heart, come to him and make that decision to start exercising self-control.
If you have not spent much time in reading his word, start today.
If you have not spent much time in prayer, start today.
The more you feed the Spirit the more the flesh will die.
With much luv in Christ
