Harold Camping and the end of the world!

I'm doing an article for LimerenceMag.com on doomsday prophecies and people who have predicted the end of the world, such as Harold Camping, who is one of the most well-known predictors of the end of the world. He has wrongly predicted that the Rapture would occur several times in the past and has now tweaked his prophecy to state that the end of the world will come very quietly.

What are your thoughts? Is the world going to end? How will the world end? What are your thoughts on Harold Camping and similar so-called prophets?

Ah, Harold Camping. He is just one of many false prophets.

Jesus said to his disciples: "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing,but underneath are ravenous wolves.(Matthew 7:15)

And again...

Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ, and will deceive many. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. (Matthew 24:4-11)

So many frightened people following people like Harold Camping, some who gave away everything that they owned in order to suddenly please God, and yet disappointed and lost when the "end" did not come, and they had "nothing" left.

Sure the world is going to end, but it's not something that is predictable by man. The Lord could come at any moment, which is why as Christians we are warned to always be prepared for the Second Coming of Christ, the "apocalypse", the End of the World. There are to be signs, sure. Read the Book of Revelation.

Until then, we must be as obedient, as Christ-like as we can. We must repent and be reverent.

He's a false prophet. I hope that he will one-day repent, as I hope some day you will as well.

Eventually, yes.

How will the world end?

The way God has told us through his word, the 66 books of the Bible.

What are your thoughts on Harold Camping and similar so-called prophets?

As I said before, he's a false prophet and I hope that he will one-day repent. False-prophets prefer "interpretations" rather than what scripture tells us.

What are your thoughts on Harold Camping and similar so-called prophets?

I don't think the problem is in Camping's particular beliefs about the end of time. Everybody's wrong about something and most are wrong about many things. The problem isn't even that he proclaimed his views - if a person really believes that history is going to cease next Tuesday, I want to know.

The problem with people like Camping is that their faith appears to hinge on a single issue. Family Radio spent in excess of 100 million USD on their apocalyptic advertising campaign, for instance. Though Camping believes and has expressed a variety of other doctrines through his previously considerable media machine, this is what he and his are now known for.

I think we all sense that Camping doesn't merely believe his predictions, but obsesses over them. The gospel became a vehicle for the predictions, rather than vice versa. We see the same thing on a lesser scale when a cage stage Calvinist shares the gospel - his thoughts on God's sovereignty are the real purpose of discussion and the rest is just a carrier wave.

I could also compare it to pick up lines - whatever he's actually saying, there's something underneath. One does well not to take the content seriously, because it's not the point. And with Camping, I don't think the particular doctrines are the point. One would have to know him better to know what frantic purposes his apocalypticism serves, but you can't take the line too seriously.

There may come a time when well-balanced believers acknowledge the coming of the end. Until then, the topic is a drain around which certain personalities are wont to swirl and, in my experience, should be treated with skepticism and perhaps even gloves.

The world will end with the battle of Armageddon. That is when Jesus comes back with his army and defeats all the armies of the dead and banishes the devil and all his demons into the lake of fire forever. Then there will be a new earth and a new heaven and God will walk among us once again like He did with Adam and Eve in the garden.

As for when this will happen, a lot of other stuff has to happen first, and Jesus said that even he does not know the day or the hour. Only the Father knows.

I don't think the problem is in Camping's particular beliefs about the end of time....

I certainly do...if his beliefs were correct then the events he said were going to come to pass would have done so.

But instead sod all happened!

For (so called) preachers to do this is a most irresponsible and evil thing and creates all sorts of problems for Christians who had believed his predictions and also gives the worlding ammunition (and quite rightly so) to ridicule Christianity, it is also such a great shame that there are so many of these false prophets about and so few genuine ones around...

Only our Heavenly Father knows the day, we were told of the signs that would come.

Let your foundation be your Heavenly Father. Jesus told us he will return, Faith will see you through everything that comes to pass.
Search the Scriptures and let the Holy spirit guide you.

By the way.. Camping never predicted the end of the world. He only predicted when the rapture will take place. The end of the world comes after other things like the tribulation (I am pretty sure he is a pre-trib believer). The way he says he got those dates was by calculating the years based on whats written in the bible. He believed that when God told Noah that he had seven days to fill the ark before the flood came, that meant that christians will have seven thousand years from the time of Noah til the rapture comes (a thousand years is like one day to God). I have no idea how he determined the month and day.

Yes he is a false prophet! Yes the world will end someday, the Bible says so! However no one knows when! So why worry about it? Jesus said don't worry about tomorow and don't dwell on the past (paraphrased) so I don't worry
Harold camping along with many others need Jesus!

The world will not end. The bible says the world will not end. It will be renewed or restored but not end. There are three different words in the bible that are translated as world. One being terra firma which is the dirt, and all the substance another refering to population of people and another refering to time frame. The end of the world is more correctly translated as end of the age, meaning the end of mans reign over the earh. At the end of armegeddon jesus will return and set up his kingdom on earth for 1000 years and we shall rule and reign with him. Rule over who? There will be a population that did not receive the mark of the beast. They will repopulate the earth and those who were raptured or martyred will rule over those with fleshly bodies. It will be a world without sin and war like the garden of eden. At the end of the thousand years the devil will be loosed for a season. This is to give those in flesh the will to choose whom they will serve. They will be faced with temptation and sin. The world as a physical planet can not end if god will set up his kingdom here. December 2012 could bring a change like never seen but will not end the world or man kind. These false prophets seek praise for themselves not for god. Do not be decieved into thinking the world will end and all man wiped out. This belief that we will be extinct and the world obliterated is saying that the bible isn't true, that god is either a liar or doesn't exsist. There's nothing wrong however with just being prepared for disaters natural or manmade.
