Bless you for turning to God. Faith and a relationship with God has baffled the
minds of the wisest. It is an inner "awareness" with outward behavior, and each personality
differs. "Guard the heart" is a reminder of the importance of spiritual integrity.

Well I'm significantly drawn to the Eastern Orthodox denomination (after some research) so any information regarding appropriate practice would be amazing.
More specifically though, I'm curious to know how best to allign myself with God's purpose. How to do right by the Lord, how to do better for others and myself.
I did not find God through church, doctrine or brotherhood, I found him at the bottom of a dark pit. Now I'd like to allign myself with the Lord's values and surrender myself unto him but I'm unsure where to start.
I am not certain how much you can learn about Eastern Orthodox theology and practice you will find in here. Generic Western Protestantism (Eastern Christian traditions tend to be more spiritually/meditatively oriented from my experience) is the predominate theological stance from what I have observed, just so you are warned.

This was through a profound "spiritual awakening" that forever has changed my life,
now over twenty-five years ago. Amen!

Prayer and my quiet times have allowed a closer relationship with a power greater than myself.

Welcome, AP. I was an ex-Hindu. The Lord saved this wretch and thus began my journey. As a new Christian, I was approached by a very sweet lady who talked to me lovingly and encouragingly about God. I was so happy to have met another believer but soon got to know from my pastor that her group was a part of a cult. She was sincere in her beliefs, but she was deceived. Had God not revealed this to me, I would have been walking towards hell without even knowing I was.
Deception is intense. Not every church is following the Lord, not every preacher is teaching the truth. From my experience and what I was taught by my mentor, a sincere prayer asking the Lord to guide me every day, to remove every wrong person and thing from my life, asking for wisdom and discernment, being instantly repentant when I mess up and believing in faith that God has forgiven me have helped me. It is important to be surrendered to God and obey Him even when it is very difficult. But the beautiful thing is when we choose to do what God wants us to , He will give us the grace to do it.
I would also recommend adding the Book of Proverbs to your Bible reading.

I don't know what type of research you have done, but I would caution you from getting trapped behind any type of denominational walls. Denominations have to do with names, and there is only one name under heaven by which we can be saved, and that name is the name of Jesus. Christ is the head of his church, and the church is his body, which extends across the globe and beyond any denominational lines. My personal advice to you would be to read the New Testament epistles, which were written to the church, to get an idea of what the church is supposed to look like from God's perspective, and not man's. I would also suggest that you ask God to show you where he wants to place you in the body of Christ or the church, 1 Corinthians 12:18.
Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians speaks a lot about God's purposes, so you might want to read that through in its entirety. Some verses of note would be Ephesians 1:8-12 and Ephesians 3:8-11.
You need to start with daily Bible reading. God's word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Without it, we are walking in darkness, and we can easily be deceived by others. Before reading it, ask the Holy Spirit to help you to properly understand it, and he will.
