Dear Secretary Fanning,
I respectfully submit this petition asking you to personally intercede to protect the First Amendment rights of Senior Master Sergeant Phillip Monk. Sergeant Monk, a distinguished member of the Air Force, serves at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. We have received news that recently he was Mirandized for possible violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Sgt. Monk was relieved of his duties because he disagreed with his commander's claim that statements of opposition to same-sex marriage constituted discriminatory behavior. Sgt. Monk disagreed, and he was correct. The repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" did not reduce either the right to free speech or the right to exercise one's religious beliefs in the Air Force. Also, Sgt. Monk's conduct in expressing his point of view with his superior was respectful and non-confrontational.
Secretary Fanning, Sgt. Monk is being discriminated against due to his religious beliefs. I, and my fellow petitioners, request that you personally take up this case and protect the religious freedoms and career of this fine member of the United States Air Force. We ask this not merely for his sake but on behalf of all religious believers serving in the armed forces. Your failure to act will have a chilling effect on speech and religious freedom in the Air Force. That is not a legacy you want to leave behind.
