We have big stuff we no longer need or it's just too big to keep. In most cases, I can give it away through Freecycle, but the stuff I'm sure people will take they tend to take it to sell it. I keep thinking we were given these things for free because we couldn't afford them, so I'd like to give them away to others who could use them, but can't afford them either.

And, yeah, in most cases, the answer would seem to be to give it back to those who gave it to us, but they have so many they don't want them. So, I'm hoping your creative thinking or experience can help me. Here's a list of what has to go. Can you think of anyone else?

Medical supplies (and the VA doesn't want any of it):
-- A wheelchair.
-- Commode.
-- Wedges.
-- walkers
-- raised toilet seat

And one odd thing that people ask about on FreeCycle but never come to get -- a forsythia bush. I learned the hard way you can't keep a forsythia in a 25 gallon container. It gets rootbound. But it's too big for me take it out of the pot. And it's still alive. It just needs some soil to go in. I have tried our horticultural society, parks department, our library (that has grounds with bushes around it), the city, and even the sports stadiums (which also have grounds.) It seems a few would be happy to take it, if I dropped it off.

Try fitting this in the trunk of your Saturn sedan. lol

In Norway we have a web portal called Finn (Find), where you can sell or give away stuff.
I guess there must exist an American equivalent.

In most cases they will write something like "Giving away for free if you pick it up at .... address "

Freecycle rocks. And forsythia bushes also rock, but you're too far away. NOBODY on Freecycle wants it? *jaw dropping*

there's craig's list, too. i have a friend who has an alert set for free things on there; he's daily browsing it to see if anyone nearby is giving away things he could use to help him with his project ((building his own greenhouse and hopefully a business to go along with it))

nuts, i could totally get that plant in my hatchback, and i would totally dig a hole and plant it in my yard. or i would totally get someone with a truck to help me, if it wouldn't fit. and i would totally love to meet you and give you a big hug.
but i bet you are nowhere near western SC.

the thing about those services is that people who desperately need wedges, a wheelchair or a walker probably aren't the people who are checking those things. maybe if you got in touch with some groups around you that work with the poor & homeless they could help direct you to someone who really needs a chair.. ?
if your church doesn't know right off anyone that needs these things, maybe they can at least put you in touch with someone who might know.

we had another church 'giveaway day' last week, where we all have something like a yardsale, but it's all free, and invite people from the community around our building ((which is poor and drug-ridden)) to come and have at it. i was reading this thinking i bet if i asked around in the crowd that showed up there, i could have found at least one person who knew someone who needed a wheelchair but couldn't afford one, or needed a walker, or other home-medical stuff.

somehow you've got to get in touch with the needy, because alot of them know each other, and network. i bet you are just advertising to the wrong crowd, in a way, going with online postings. but then, those people probably aren't going to be able to come and pick things up, either :p

yeah i'd try through church channels, to reach humanitarian aid groups, and see if there's something like a shelter etc. nearby who knows of a need for those things.

If Hermione hits just right, it might blow down your way. lol

Thanks, everyone. I didn't think of the different ministries within our local church. (Not a member, so I forget.)

we have often seem such items in many of our any local thrift stores, especially the ones who are associated
with 'Hospice and such' - we have seen many expensive items for sale at very low affordable
prices, we have even purchased some things in this way and are very grateful for the donors...
