Help with chickens?

Ok, so the chickens we got last year are all fat , happy and producing plenty of eggs. :)

My daughter felt they were doing so well that with out warning she brought home three more young clucks.:)
After some adjustment they are doing well, also beginning to produce more eggs. :)

Two weeks ago though, a neighbor came to our home, as she was watching over another neighbors home, and she was concerned we had lost one of our chickens.

Knowing it was not ours, but concerned, we went to the home to try and figure out wether it was lost or abandoned.
It was an almost grown chicken, very thin and no word or idea where it came from.

Lately alot of chickens are being dropped off, abandoned, dumped in places, maby by those who thought they wanted chickens, soon deciding that the idea wasnt as wonderful as they thought it would be.

Anyway, we brought the little lady home to our chicken hutch and run, (we call her orphan annie :)) and figured she would go through the ussual adjustment of the pecking order then settle in.
It was funny to watch the smallest of our chickens that was the bottem of the pecking order ( she is called henny penny :)) see herself as finally having a chicken she could be boss over. :)

Well it is now two weeks and poor orphan annie has still not settled is, and the other chickens just keep going after her heavy duty, if she comes down off the top of the hen house.

We have started feeding her on top of the house to make sure she is getting enough food, but worry this might slow her settleing in.
As she is simply afraid to come down with the other chickens, but we wonder if orphan annie simply needs to go through the pecking process.

When I go in to the chicken run, poor orphan annie looks to me for comfort, she lets me pet her and talk to her and looks so sad when I leave. :(

So, are there any of you chicken lovers, owners, out there with any ideas or answers as to what we should or should not do?

​orphan annie needs to stop being such a chicken little! LOL! Dont worry, eventually the others will get used to her being there and accept her. Maybe you could stop petting and comforting her for now. She will never stand up for herself to the other chickens if "mommy" coddles her all the time. :)
 
True, I am a soft touch for a sad face, or beak, :)
We have even considered blocking the top of the hen house, so she cannot run away.
The only reason the others hens cannot get to her, is because they are fat and happy.
They try, but cannot get up to the top.
We trimmed orphan annie's wing to keep her from being able to fly, but she is a strong winged girl, and still can get height even with her clipped wing.
You are probably right though, she just needs to go through the pecking order, funny thing is, as strong as she is, Im sure she could take the other chickens on, and win, no problem. :)

pickles, you're welcome. Orphan Annie will be just fine once she realizes she can stand up to the other chickens. :)
 
I never had too much to do with chickens being that they are such nasty creatures. Well, maybe not all of them but there was one banty rooster that got the better of me when I was little and the ruffle of feathers still sends chills down my spine. I remember my mother kept new arrivals separated in the hen house using ....chicken wire of course. The creatures could eyeball each other without going into the attack mode. I realize you are past this stage so good luck to you . I was curious with your dilemma and found this site interesting.
How do I introduce new chickens into my old flock? from My Pet Chicken

If your situation deteriorates to the point of bloodshed an option is chicken sun glasses, red tint preferred. lol
 
Take the skinny one for a long drive in the country, kick him outta da car............drive home, get one of the fat ones.........some good batter, heat the oil to a hot 350 degrees, fry 'em up real good.........and EAT!

I understand about roosters, they can be agressive, thats why we never got one, that and wanting to keep our neighbors happy. :)

Awww p_rehbein, we think thats what happened to this poor chicken, where is your chicken heart? :)
Actually we will probably just block the top of the chicken hutch, and partition a small area in the run for orphan annie.
Although the chicken glasses would be a fun thing to do, a bunch of four eyed clucks, what a sight. lol :)

I worked in an office that was run by the pecking order of the chicken. It was a terrible place to work.

You are wise not to let a rooster near your ladies. The roosters in this office strutted, preened, and ruled. The ladies did all the work. The roosters also decided on the pecking order of the ladies, based on the endowments on the ladies and how well they showed them off.

I dont think it would be a good idea, as Im sure my husband would lay an egg himself if we got chickens. :) LOL

Well an update on orphan annie! :)
The lost chicken we found.
It turns out the owners were looking for her, but somehow the info about us having found her was mixed up so it was finally three weeks later when we connected.
Thankfully, orphan annie is now home with her family, which is a blessing for both her family and us, as she never did get along with our chickens, and was struggling, and our chickens were starting to stress as well and eggs were falling off.
Now all is well for orphan annie and our chickens are fat, happy and producing plenty of eggs again! :)

The wildest part is the the owners of orphan annie ?
Both the wife and husband shared the same names as my husband and I.
What are the odds of that? :)LOL:)
