Being humble before God in knowing that We are sinners and are seperated from God but through christ we are saved. We need to repent. Yes, it is that God loves us and our Lord Jesus demonstrated this perfectly when he continued loving even people who mistreated him in the most vile manner imaginable.
As we follow the Spirit he gives us, we do turn from sin and are conformed to his image. This will also cause some people to mistreat us to some degree, conforming us to his image in that way also.
