In the dawn of the ninth century arose
A Benedictine monk to northern shadows
Ansgar, to pagans bearing witness of light
Sailed into darkness to bring them sight
Across the sea, under a gray storm's veil
In Birka’s heart, his faith would not fail
Visions led through peril and night
The cross shines forth, his guiding light
March, Herald of the North
Through Viking lands, you set forth
Through frost and fire, bring forth the faith
In hearts of runestone, new words engrave
King’s halls and pagan shores
He walked where fear grips and war roars
Churches rise from the runestone land
Built by his weary, faithful hand
In Hedeby's streets, amidst raiders’ cries
He taught of love beyond the skies
Through trials where many would fall
His voice a beacon for those who call
March, Herald of the North
Through Viking lands, you set forth
Through frost and fire, bring forth the faith
Through trials and cold, your mission embraced
Under the Northern star so bright
Against the sword, he spreads the light
In lands of ice, witness to the Word
A lone sentinel of the Lord
From Corbie’s walls to the Norseman’s heart
A mission divine, he played his part
The seeds of faith, in cold ground sown
A future church, from his courage grown
March, Herald of the North
Through Viking lands, you set forth
Through trials, shone the light of faith
In sacred echoes, your legacy waits
Ansgarius, through the fire and frost
Bringing hope eternal to the lost
Herald of the North, under Christ's reign
Symphony and steel to remind of the name
I also made a song version. Its genre kind of hard to define. It is perhaps best classified as symphonic folk rock or metal, although it is not as heavy as one might expect from metal, in part because of the "folky" elements.
