Have you ever gotten a person's digits and felt like they just gave you their number because you asked, and not because they were really interested in you?

When I was 23, I had given my phone number to a guy I had a date with and then just avoided the phone call. So immature I know. He had the number before the date started just to firm up plans. The date didn't go very well, he walked me home and went in for a kiss, and I turned my head slightly out of away and he ended up kissing me ear lol. Truly awkward.

That's funny...this reminds me of something...but what could it be?? (trace your cursor over the words)

Anyway, all jokes aside...I can relate. It often seems awkward to exchange numbers. I think a lot of people might do so out of courtesy, but the actually implication is if it's nothing an emergency or specifically related to something important (school, work, church, ext)...don't call or contact me...ever.

It's often said the best advice comes from people that have experience in a particular area

Sorry, I'm no help.

I guess I am just trying to figure out what would cause a person to give their number to somebody that they have no intentions of talking with.

I can't help you either. If I wouldn't consider dating a guy or didn't want to talk with him, I wouldn't give him my number.

But if he asks and I DO give him my number, it's annoying if he plays those stupid "I have to wait 3 days before I call so I don't seem desperate" games.

I had a girl give me her number when I didn't even ask. She handed me a stick of gum after youth group and walked off, I opened up the wrapper and there was no gum just her telephone number written inside.
I was very dissapointed in the lack of gum so I threw the wrapper away.

I don't ask for men's numbers, but on the flip side, I wouldn't give out my number unless the person and I have already made plans to do something. I'm not sure why you would ambiguously collect someone's number, seems like it would make for an awkward phone convo, if there's no context.
If you keep having that feeling where you're unsure why a girl agreed to give you her number, make sure you're more specific on why you're obtaining the number in the first place...like to confirm plans you've made, get directions, etc.

In response to all the responders, there are some (or many) who do just talk and text on the phone. I was in a long distance relationship which held things like that and Skype as the only means of connection. We also met online, so...even if you don't have something planned, it's not ambiguous. That's also the way I can connect with many whom are not immediately around me. Though we're all busy, sometimes it's nice to just have someone call and ask about your day.

Anyway, just call. If someone doesn't like that, then apologize and suggest they not give people their numbers if they do not want to be contacted. If you asked for it because you had a school or work related deal; however, don't overstep your boundaries. It depends on how, when, and and why you got their number.

This isn't about asking ambiguously for a number. This is assuming that both parties are clear on why the number was asked for in the first place. I guess I should have made the OP more clear. If I get a girls number, call her a few times and never get a call back or anything, I'd say I have every reason to question why she gave me her number in the first place.

...hmm...in that case I'd say it was out of not being able to handle rejecting you flat out...so she gave you her number (or a false one), and ignored you.

At least you didn't get the rejection hotline number...

I don't give my number unless the woman asks two separate times. That's a better indication that she'll call or accept your call. Ah, the crazy games we play just trying to figure out each other.

Yeah..its not the best or most mature way to handle not being interested in someone on her end, the phone avoidance, but if it happens I'd just let it go. Don't leave messages or texts.

I've always kinda wondered what that hotline is like lol, and at least there wouldn't be any question as to if she was interested if I did get the hotline number
