you might come off as an abrasive american. lol i didn't think about it living here so long, most american are abrasive in that they don't have the body language and restraint needed to communicate effectively. about 80 % of my home communication was nonverbal signals and established expectations. we don't talk as much, not as physically demonstrative, etc. I'm reading a few books I will post the titles and some websites. google "asian business courtesy" or something to learn some of it. American business men take classes on the topic so as not to offend their business counterparts.
As for the girls well i didn't talk to many boys when i was in high school. it is very discouraged. the only boys i meet were friends of my brothers and classmates when we had to work on projects. I definitely would have kept walking if a guy approached me on the street. lol i still do sometimes without thinking about it.
what did you say to the one guy? perhaps some of your neighbors haven't been as friendly? I don't know it depends on the person. like i said ring the doorbell and bring them a house warming gift. that's how we meet our neighbors. Invite them to church, if they have kids encourage them to bring them to bible school. get them involved with Jesus, some are actually christian already.
