this happened today: a guy calls me & says, "are you the guy that buys antiques"? i said, "yes" & he starts to tell me what he has which took along time, much of the talk was useless. then he says, "maybe i'll suggest that you come to one of our revivals". me: "what kind of revival"? him: "it's a Christian revival". me: "are you a born again Christian"? him: "yes". so he begins talking for 10 minutes, which was a lot of rambling on. he stops talking & i start telling him a story. he interrupts within 5 seconds & rants again for another 10 minutes. that happened 3 more times. so finally, he interrupts & i said, " hold on, you talk too much, let me finish my story" & he interrupts again!!! holyheavens!!!! i so much dislike the interruptions of people. that is super rude, selfish & discourteous, especially from a born again Christian! who has dealt with people like that? tell your story if you wish. thanks.

In the real physical world , I don't enjoy talking about myself , I'm very much a quiet listener . So , I've noticed that I tend to attract people who love to talk , which I don't mind , as I don't really enjoy talking . I do sometimes become aware that the fact that I don't say much ( in comparison to others ) does seem to irk some people so , if I get this sense from someone , I will make the effort to reply and maybe share something about me but , I've discovered that most people just aren't that interested 😆😆😆 they were just a bit freaked out by the fact that I spent so much time quietly listening to them ! So , silence is definitely golden 😜 .

I find folks like that are lonely.

They have no one who listens to them. So,when they do find someone on their same page, everything they've held in so long comes rushing out.

They're so excited to finally be heard.

I worked with a lady like that.

It takes compassion , patience , and empathy to allow for that poor souls pain to find a healing opportunity.

I found it is Quakers who talk the most.

Worship in silence, then spend the rest of the time making up for it. Your ears will likely fall off if you in vicinity of any Quaker outside of a meeting house.

you own a great gift: listening! which encompasses a high level of patience. that's special. i dated a girl once like that. i didn't over welcome my talk with her but she sure was a concentrated listener.

back about 12 years ago, i was attending Christian meetings with friends & there was a guy who was a pastor who talked incessantly & selfishly. so he said that praying to mary was alright. so i pointed out verses Hebrews 1:1,2, 7:25, 9:15, 12:24, Colossians 1:19, 3:17 & especially, 1st Timothy 2:5. he said that mary goes to God with prayers. he couldn't show me in the Bible that that is true. we know it isn't there! then he made the mistake of telling me he schooled himself on-line to become a pastor! i told him that's why he doesn't;'t know the truth that mary is not an intercessor not can anyone be successful by praying to her.

Some are lonely. Some are arrogant and think their opinions are the only important ones.

The symptom can have one or more of multiple causes. Some people can be both lonely AND arrogant.

my Quaker friend will whinge about the transport in Auckland to anyone who'll listen even if they've heard it a thousand times.
This is why I have to limit my time with her.
She's from the UK also and generally people from the UK who up sticks and move to NZ are notorious whingers/complainers. They complain about too much immigration too, even though they are migrants themselves. 🤷‍♀️

Probably arrogance and sanctimonious has something to do with it, not an admirable trait unfortunately. I just kind of tune out when she does this, after all, I am not the Fat Controller of the transport system (or lack of) and can't do anything about it.

In the US it seems anyone can be a pastor. Well any man. You don't even have to go to seminary or be ordained. You can just say 'God anointed me' and then make up your own church, and the US will recognise it because freedom to worship any way you want.

It can be a good thing, it can also be a very, very bad thing.

Reminds me of an interview from long ago with Bruce Lee.

The journalist says, some people say you're very arrogant.

Lee smiles and says, yes. But I can show you why.
😆

that's about right. that's why i haven't been to steady church in years, no one delivers a decent sermon, they all are boring. i can stay home & watch & listen to adrian rogers, charles Stanley, michael ucsf, john ankerberg, billy graham, greg laurie, chuck smith, the haggis's, dvid jeremiah & so on.

That is a lot of people...

All at the same time??

I have read some of those peoples books. They had them in the church library and the public library too.

It is easier to read a book than to listen to someone talk (for me) as I can read at my own pace/leisure. Also don't need to plug in/charge a battery. Just turn the actual pages.

I’m actually someone who loves to talk. Of course, it depends a lot on who I’m with and what we are talking about. But I’m also a good listener and observer and I tend to be quite agreeable and encouraging.
Interestingly, my work personality and my free-time personality are almost completely different. At work I’m the quiet one. People often say I have the patience of a saint. I listen, encourage people, stay calm, think carefully before I answer and usually try to find a solution.
But outside of work… well… ooh, I can talk. A lot.
For several years, I used to talk on the phone with a man I was close to in Canada almost every time I drove to or from work. That was kind of our thing. I talked about everything. Probably a little too much sometimes. And I will admit I didn’t always give him enough time to get a word in.
It’s been more than six months since our paths went separate ways and for some reason I haven’t really wanted to talk to anyone else during those drives, even though the long drives can feel lonely. These days I would rather sit quietly with my thoughts. And honestly, that’s new for me.

I also used to work in telemarketing and project work. I could spend seven hours a day talking on the phone and still call my friends in the evening like, “Hi, it’s me again! Have you heard…?” 😂
I talked to my customers about all kinds of things on the side, but I also knew when to stop talking and simply listen when they wanted to tell me something. And I was actually very good at selling.
I think being able to really be present with people made all the difference.

So yes, I understand the “talking too much” problem. But I also think there’s a big difference between being enthusiastic and talkative and simply not caring whether the other person gets a chance to speak.

All of that talking and you didn't get a single antique... Well you technically did, you got something old that you already hate.
