If you look at the news today, you will see reports about dire environmental issues happening throughout the world. One of these, are the fires happening in the Western part of the United States. When we then look at the lyrics in the song "Hotel California" by the Eagles, where some dance to remember, while others dance to forget; when applied to what is currently transpiring in California, one could interpret these lyrics to mean that those who dance to remember, are those who continue with their daily lives looking back fondly on how things were better in the past, while those who dance to forget, continue with their daily actions, trying to forget how things were better in the past, when the skies were not always orange from so many fires.
Recognizing therefore the fires as the issue, and that attempts would be made to mitigate the catastrophe at hand; the lyrics, where in their masters chambers, they stab at the beast with their steely knives, but just can't kill the beast; could be interpreted as bringing up valid points to kill consumerism policy that is the underlying cause for the fires, but due to the love for material goods, their points of reason are ultimately unsuccessful in killing their master, (consumerism) the beast.

Of course a person can check out but they can never leave.
Hi UnoiAmarah, Sorry to respond so late on this, but I have been gone for the last week or so. "Checking out any time you want", is taking a hiatus from the love for the material goods fossil fuels affords all of us today, while "you can never leave", is our coming back to the love for the material goods affords all of us today. Thus, when they stab at their master, the beast of consumerism with their points of reason, but cannot kill it, it is because of the love for the things/idols fossil fuels afford us, that they will continue on as before, despite the increasing damage to the environment.

Hotel California's verses are all about carnality and vice in the 1970's and from the perspective of each Eagles member.
