Hello, fellow Singles!!

Just thought I'd ask for some advice from everyone out there in being able to discern when someone is telling the truth or not, whether in real life, or, most especially, online, since we all know it can be easier to make things up about who you are online than in everyday life.

I know some people will say that EVERYONE out there is lying and not who they really claim to be, but happily, I've found this isn't always true. I have always loved writing letters and had pen pals from childhood. Throughout the years, I met several people I wrote, including a pen pal from Japan. Last year, I was privileged to meet a dear friend from this site, and we had an absolute blast, whether living it up on roller coasters or singing along with worship at her church.

However, there are some bad experiences as well. I am on two Christian dating sites and someone very seemingly nice with extremely good-looking pictures started sending me messages and initiating conversations. I told him from the start that I wasn't interested in dating him (being 35 at the time, I didn't feel comfortable with the idea of dating someone 23, but that's just me) but said it was fine if he wanted to talk.

We started talking about our lives... and eventually he said he had an issue bothering him and felt comfortable talking to me about it if I didn't mind. After some discussion, I told him I knew some elders at my church would might be able to offer more guidance, and offered to get their numbers for him. This must have broken down some kind of wall, because he finally said, "Kim, I can't believe you actually want to help instead of making fun of me or condemning me... You've been so open with me, I really need to tell you something."

The long story short is that, his entire profile was made up. He was not whom he claimed to be--he was a different age, lived in a different state, was not the person in the pictures, and was MARRIED. He tried to tell me his wife knew he was talking to me because they had few Christian friends. I told him, I understand trying to make friends, but being married and trying to find them on dating sites is not the way to do it. I immediately broke contact, deleted my account, and left the site.

I was immensely upset. Now, I am not perfect in any way, shape, or form, but one thing I do stand by is that I tell God EVERYTHING, and, out of extreme anger, I told Him, "Lord, I am SO FED UP with all of this. Anyone you send to me... I am going to ask you to cut their heart open and bleed it out right in front of me from the beginning, because you know I will tell them to do the same with me! I am SICK of people thinking they can get away with lying about who they really are!!!" I regularly pray that God will keep me honest with other people... and other people honest with me. It sometimes takes years... but I have seen many incidences in my life where God answers this prayer--in both directions.

My personal experience is that if I want other people to be honest with me, I HAVE to be honest with other people first, even if I get hurt.

Maybe I was just plain stupid. I'm very trusting by nature, and I always give people the benefit of the doubt, probably to a fault. So... help a fellow Christian out here and, if you are willing, please share your thoughts, stories, and advice. Have similar thing things happened to you? How have you handled it, and how did you let go of the feelings of betrayal and anger?

How can you tell if a person is being REAL or cranking out LIES???!!! And how do you ever come to a point of trusting someone enough to meet them or allow them into your life after you've been burned?

Looking forward to hearing your answers... God bless!!

P.S. The poll is anonymous--no one will know how you answered--and multiple choice. Feel free to check all that apply.

I have never had that experience before so I don't know how it feels.

All I have to offer is that I think people do that because they are unhappy with their lives and want to live vicariously thru the lives of a made up person. Its sad really. If you wanna make up a pretend life in your own head then fine, but don't drag real life people into you fake world.

I think anytime we meet new people we are taking a chance at being let down in a friendship. When we extend ourselves as loving Christians, potential friends or mates, business partners, we become very vulnerable to people who are not like us, authentic God fearing folk.

It is not a good feeling at all to ever be decieved but its really just a part of life.

I would answer this two different ways based on whether it was online or face-to-face. When I'm online, I am honest about what I believe and feel but I don't share personal facts about myself, purely for safety reasons/anonymity. I don't ever intentionally try to mislead people though. Face-to-face I am always just who I am and unpretentious. My best friend told me once that if they don't like something about you that you share openly then they really don't like the REAL you anyway, even if you hide it. So why be phoney? I prefer complete honesty in a relationship. Online is not a "real" relationship so to answer the OP I would say you can't really tell if a person is lying to you or not until you get to know them face-to-face. That's my opinion.

I just wanted to add on a thought about the OP's comment that she got burned. I felt that way just the other day about a relationship that went south after a couple of years (I was very naive and trusting as well....) and I heard the Spirit remind me in my head of that verse that says, "Do not cast your pearls before swine, or they will turn and tear you to pieces." I started crying and asked God why he let me walk down that path when I always try to do his will and I always pray about everything--why did he let me be so foolish as to let myself do that? His reply: "Jesus cast his pearls before swine too..." (I cried even harder...) "Okay Lord, but if Jesus did the same thing, what is the lesson here?" He answered, "He did it for LOVE. So did you."

I am honest and open about who I am when meet new people. Wether it be online or in person and I expect the same from other people. I recently mey a guy here on this site and we got along great. After a couple days of talking here, we exchanged Yahoo IM info and things progressed from there. We're getting along great and having fun. I decided to look him up on facebook and found out he was MARRIED. I was so hurt and upset, I deleted him from Yahoo but not after asking a million questions demanding that he tell me the truth. He didn't respond for a week. When he finally did, he said he lied because he wasn't happy being married and it made him angry to talk about it. We still talk every now and then and he still hasn't talked about it.

I am sorry this happened to you. But do you really think it is wise to carry on a friendship with this married man? He is deceptive. He is decieving his wife and continuing an emotional relationship with this man is dangerous.

I wanted to express my condolences as well, CCC--HOW AWFUL, and unfortunately, it seems to happen all the time... very often on CHRISTIAN sites.

Hence... the reason I wrote these threads. It's just been something very heavy on my heart lately... the thought that as Christians, we need to be honest with each other. We can't claim to have the love of God and then blatantly lie to each other, most especially about who we are.

I'm not saying, of course, that one has to throw EVERYTHING out there about him/herself... But I'm just tired of running into all these situations where people say they are "X" and turn out to be "Y", "Z", and the "Number 666" on top of it... then leave you to try to figure out who the "real" them is in the middle of the mess.

What really gets me is... if we are Christians, how can we expect to think that GOD doesn't know, even if we manage to fool other people?! I guess some people don't take God seriously in that He says "honest scales and measures are His delight" (I am positive this includes being honest about ourselves as well), "love your neighbor as yourself", and the fact that we will reap what we sow.

Who wants to reap back lies??!!! The first step in prevention is to have respect for God's Word and not to sow them in the first place. I am firm believer in that if you tell lies... eventually, that's all that's going to come back to you... kind of like the little boy who kept hollering "wolf".

Sorry to sound so frustrated but I've had some bad experiences lately as well!!

We all have. It's nice to be around people that have had similar experiences and are always ready and willing to listen.

What's that scripture that says something to the effect that we are to be as shrewd as serpents but innocent as doves..."? I think God wants us to all use discretion and not that we become paranoid but that we always test everything to see if it is from God? Does it pass the test of prayer, the test of scrutiny, the test of integrity and goodness? Then it's genuine. That's hard to know at first glance so there's always the potential for getting duped. A little bit of urban wisdom: "Fool me once--shame on you; fool me twice--shame on me."

I'm so sorry that happened to you, Kim. I've said before that I left chat completely several years ago because I was totally disgusted, but what I didn't say was that it was because of a similar sitation. One guy turned out to be married after leading me on for four months. The second was actually making plans to have his "local" girlfriend move in with him at the same time he was wanting to meet me. I didn't want anything to do with chat after that...period. When I came across this forum last year, it did seem different and, so far, so good... But I'm sure it happens here too.

I have also met some very good people from online over the years though. A law enforcement forum I participated in had several "meets" around the country, especially in Washington DC during police week. One lady friend (the wife of the federal officer who'd initially set up the forum) passed away from cancer a couple of years ago and I miss her very much.

I completely understand your online safety concerns. I don't like throwing too much personal information out there either. No woman should to be honest. I've helped put a LOT of VERRRRRRRRRRRY bad folks in jail for long periods of time. It's not only myself I'm protecting, but my family/friends as well. People in my line of work receive death threats on a regular basis.

I put my pics up a lot when I first came here, but someone told me a few months ago that it was a very vain thing to do, so I stopped. And I think most of us ladies who have been on cam online know the sort of PMs we're going to get within seconds of firing it up. I'm okay with it one on one with people I've come to know pretty well, but if you do it in one of the main rooms...ugh.

There are ways of knowing that I can't say here, but the two most telling ways are 1. inconsistency; and 2. when the only form of contact you can have with them is online (no phone; as you said, someone else answers their phone; no address you could send a birthday/Christmas card to).

Being online is dangerous. Period. It's unwise to let your guard down.

OK Kim, I guess you somehow figured out that I'm not really a fighter pilot in the hawaiian air force and I don't really own a villa resort on Maui with its own private beach and golf course or that I didn't really inherit 80 million dollars from my uncle Jim the astronaut who died in the Apollo 16 disaster. What can I say? You got me! I'm sorry!

I met a guy on a site a year ago and he said he was christian, so i said ok im glad of it, but one day the story of Abraham and Sara came to the conversation and i was very surprised that he told me a completely different story, i asked him if he really christian, and he said that he was but i started to doubt about him, i continued talking with him and he told me he was in a country and it was ok, but one day, it was the change of time (summer time) and there were 2 hours of difference between us only for a week and i thought it was kind of funny of ask him the time, but i was very surprised that he told me a wrong hour, he didnt know that there were those difference in the clocks, so i felt disapointed because i realized that he lied about the coutry in which he was living, after that he said some more things that were contradictory and then i decided to stop talkin so often with this guy because he lied a lot and i dont think his lies were "necesary" or that are "justified". So sometimes i see him on msn and i talk with him once a month or 2 but only for a few minutes because i dont trust him anymore.

You can tell when a guy is lying when he says things like "oh snap I lost another eyeliner brush!" or he actually knows why women use cottonballs!

Weed!

Something most of the people I've met online have in common. :( Relationship Killer.

For reals though people like to paint pictures of how we are suppose to see them. They don't want to talk about their baggage or their scars or their waist line, they want to learn or be loved or both.

I dunno. I'm pretty much the same In person. Probably a little less confrontational and judgemental in real life.

Wait a minute, Zero... ALL THOSE THINGS ABOUT YOU AREN'T TRUE??? WHAT???!!!

:D

Seriously, you're really nice guy... thank goodness you never tried to tell me all that junk under false pretenses because otherwise we could not have been friends!

I want to thank everyone for sharing their stories!!! I just think it's important to make other people aware of what goes on as well... so that they can be make good choices and prevent falling into any traps when they notice the warning signals...

The other most important thing to do, of course, is to pray. I'll ask God if a certain person is someone He wants in my life for a few days... and if I can't sleep/am restless/have confused thoughts... I take that as a definite NO.

I think the biggest hangout for married guys who want to mess around on the side is THE INTERNET.

YEP..and some things I have noticed are these, They:

1. Always want to PM, never participate in main chat, and the conversation is of a personal nature, not regarding matters of faith (This is why a lot of single ladies put up chat notices that they don’t want to PM with you unless they know you from main chat);
2. Always want to type and not voicechat for fear of being overheard;
3. Are online sporadically (when the spouse isn’t home);
4. You can only talk over the phone at prearranged times and never late at night.

I realize that some of these things will happen to everyone from time to time, but if you see them ALL, it should be a red flag that the person is probably married and up to no good.

Here's another way to find out if a guy online is really married: Ask him if he ever takes off his wedding ring. If there is a long pause...watch out!
