The fact is that everyone knows that they'll die someday. The truth, however, is that not many believe it.
Why do I say that?
If we truly believe that someday we will die we'll definitely do things differently.
Take for instance our clamour for wealth (most of our lives everything we think about and do is mainly for the acquisition of wealth); our desperation and anxiety for our future (some worry and stress over things that can only happen in the future, for instance, if, who and when they'll get married; how to provide for a child's university education; how to pay off a mortgage; etc); and our self-centred and selfish dispositions (it's often always about us, I want this, I will like to do this, I this I that and me me me) but rarely do we pause to spare a thought for others (what can I do for that fellow, how can I be of assistance to this person, how can I impact on another individual's life) we often only live for ourselves.
Sadly even when we do things for others we do it for ourselves and not for them - we do it so as to make them feel indebted to us or to regard us as charitable persons or to show them that we're more privileged than them - but we often rarely do anything purely and solely for the benefit of the other person.
It is only when we learn to die well that we are able to live well.
Many a wealthy individuals, who had lived selfishly, have learnt this hard truth too late in life - mostly at the point of death - wishing they could turn back time and do everything differently. They then realise that they had wasted a lifetime in pursuit of shadows and emptiness - things that in truth don't really matter - at the expense of the things that do. Sadly life has got no reverse gear - we can only move forward - and once a moment is gone it's lost for eternity never to be encountered again let alone undone or redone.
You may think that life couldn't be better if only you can finally buy that dream car, yatch or private jet. Or if you can finally accumulate more than enough savings in the bank. Or if you can finally live the dream live.
Well am sorry to burst your bubble but what joy will all of that bring if at the time of actualizing these dreams you're also diagnosed with a terminal disease? Will you still be happy, at least you've now got yourself a Ferrari, yatch, private jet, more money in the bank than you can ever spend, never mind the insignificant terminal illness?
It is only when faced with certain death that mankind begins to appreciate life. Sadly once death comes knocking it cannot be bribed or paid off. It comes for one thing and one thing alone - our soul - and will not accept anything else in exchange. It is when faced with death that we realise that our most valuable possession is life itself and not our material possessions.
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
Psalms 90:12 KJV .
Treasure your life. Cherish it. Nurture it. Appreciate it. Be grateful for it. Protect it. Use it. Don't abuse it. Once it's gone it's gone.
Everything else can be replaced but not your life.
How are you living life?
A life without the involvement of the Life-Giver - The Creator, Maker - God is futile and doomed. You can never truly enjoy life if you exclude God from it.
God it is that gives every life a meaning, and a purpose, without which life would be a burden.
Live responsibly.
