Ask them if they fully affirm the Athanasian Creed. Fastest way to separate a Christian from a pretender. For bonus points wheresoever they disagree with the Athanasian Creed or refuse to outright answer with a clear yes or no, you'll be able to identify their heresies, their cults, and/or their demons. Be warned though, the Devil's most possessed children start squirming real hard when confronted with the definitive statement of faith in the truth of the Christian religion, they will attempt many of their master's deceits and tricks, stand fast and smash them down in the name of Jesus, amen.

I prefer to stick with inspired scripture rather than a much later devised creedal statement that is more metaphysical than biblical, even though it doesn't deny biblical, central doctrines in and of itself:

1 Corinthians 15:1-4
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Inspired scripture never said one must believe, affirm or anything else, in a credal statement for salvation, nor to prove one is saved by such a declaration, but rather believing the gospel preached by Paul.

The error here is that the Athanasian Creed is the definitive doctrine of the Bible summed up, it reveals a lack of knowledge not just of the Creed, but really of also the Bible. Read the Bible many times, the Athanasian Creed is formulated around correctly identifying and thoroughly wording the most essential doctrines necessary for salvation in the Bible. What you attempt to cite here is the second part of the Creed, the portion about the Gospel (the key essential points in paranthesis in the previous quote.) It is good you know and believe the Gospel indeed, that is necessary for salvation, but you cannot neglect the trinity doctrine which is the first half of the Athanasian Creed either, or else you don't really believe in God, or you're grossly ignorant and will be a prey to the heathens, and this is becuase the trinity doctrine is tied into the first and important commandment of all time and salvation is "you will worship only the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before me" (me meaning God). One that does not believe the trinity doctrine does not believe in God nor in Jesus nor in the apostle Paul inspired by the Holy Spirit whom wrote correctly much of the basis of the Athanasian Creed. To deny to affirm the Creed claiming it is not inspired scripture is to deny to affirm the Bible, but if you truly read the Bible and understand the Bible you simply affirm the Athanasian Creed since it is the central message that the whole Bible makes.

This is not a condemnation either, you do well to believe in the Gospel portion, basically the second half of the Athanasian Creed, but you do lack in Bible knowledge as well as in understanding the Athanasian Creed. 1 John 5 as a whole chapter of course is probably for the title of this topic and overall in general then the best chapter just by the Bible, but i'll just display the first half for you and this well corroborates the Athanasian Creed. You need to do more study of both the Bible and the Athanasian Creed, and don't take that the wrong way in text, I believe it will strengthen you since you present strong verses for the belief Gospel section of the Creed which are indeed essential to salvation like Paul said. Get stronger through the Creed and the Bible on then probably the first half, the trinity doctrine, praise Jesus.

1 John 5:1-11
1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

The error here is that the Athanasian Creed is the definitive doctrine of the Bible summed up, it reveals a lack of knowledge not just of the Creed, but really of also the Bible.

If only it were indeed so pure in its body.

That Creed relies on philosophical terminology—such as "substance," "essence," and "person"—terms that don't appear in the Bible or its original languages apart from perhaps some of the more modern versions that are known to be replete with errors.

While the Bible speaks of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the rigidity in the use of metaphysical definitions in the Creed to describe the Trinity are developments known to have originated and thus built upon later, Greek philosophy rather than direct, biblical revelations. You Gentiles seem to have a fixation on such alterations to the wondrous languages from which the Bible was translated. From this Greek-infected perspective upon which the creed was built, its creators attempted to define a mystery using human logic and terminology that the biblical authors were NOT inspired by the Lord to write. The sheer vanity of including such metaphysical concepts and terms is mostly descriptive of Eastern Mysticism's bent upon spiritual things. That's problematic in my mind.

Another point that I find contention with is the Creed's use of exclusive and absolute language where the scriptures are not so concrete in the same direction. For example, the Athanasian Creed explicitly states that whoever doesn't hold the Catholic faith "whole and undefiled" is condemned to "everlasting damnation," thus standing upon a works-based salvational grounding the Bible doesn't uphold for us today under the Gospel of Grace.

This legalistic approach to salvation, based squarely on the precise, intellectual assent to a complex theological formula, isn't found to have been inspired by what you Gentiles call the New Testament. The formers of that creed point to biblical themes of faith, grace, and the simplicity of the Gospel as being at odds with a requirement to master the nuanced distinctions of Trinitarian metaphysics to avoid hell. That isn't at all what either Christ taught, the twelve nor Paul, even though the Kingdom Gospel is somewhat more works oriented in the arena of perseverance as am ongoing demonstration of one's faith.

That Creed also oversimplifies or misrepresents the relationship between the persons of the Trinity contrary to how they're described in the Bible. While the Creed emphasizes a strict equality and co-eternity, certain passages suggest a functional subordination of the Son to the Father (e.g., John 14:28, "The Father is greater than I"). They contend that the Creed's insistence on absolute equality ignores the relational dynamics presented in the Gospels, therefore I don't see that creed as absolutely representative of the Bible it claims to represent.

Are we going the whole Catholic vs Protestant route again - who is the REAL christian?

Or Tulipers vs Free Willers

Grace vs Works

gah why is this not in the BDF. Why does this topic have to be in miscellaneous. Miscellaneous Forum is for all the threads that can't or don't fit into any of the other forums.

Usually I am not a stickler for rules, but the categories can help direct the discussions and for people that just want to have a bit of light relief they don't want to land themselves in the middle of yet another (fruitless) debate.

I mean there's the door, and it's Jesus.

JESUS! Why bother arguing about it? If someone you believe is not really a Christian, then do your best to witness to them and show them the gospel. When they know the truth, it will set them free from whatever delusion they have found themselves in.

That debate isn't the beginning point, nor will it ever be resolved to the satisfaction of all in this world of conflict and contradictions.

So, to answer your question, I'd have to say that the real topical point here is the sufficiency in the shed Blood of Christ, never minding all the claims from within religions and the creeds to which anyone may have chosen to adhere. Perhaps we can, or cannot, agree that creeds, in and of themselves, aren't inspired by Holy Spirit, even though they may seem to be consistent with scripture, it can be asked why they were ever developed at all rather than to simply point to scripture.

So, I personally don't really care who identifies with the word "Christian" or not. That identifier doesn't save anyone any more than attending religious observances, services, sacraments, praise sessions, prayer sessions, et al. What matters is what one believes about Jesus...one either believes in the sufficiency in His statement of "It is finished," or one doesn't. One either believes that Jesus paid it all, or one doesn't. Those two people cannot both be right, but they can both be wrong, or the one be right and the other wrong. That should drive us to discovery and self-examination. The Law if Non-contradiction is a law that God Himself established that cannot be legitimately violated in this realm nor can God Himself violate it...meaning that it's an empirical law that is at the level of governance by which even God Himself is governed; meaning that even God is not sovereign in the sense of what most people understand.

So, if one disagrees that salvation is by what Paul declared in his gospel given to him by Christ Jesus, which is bereft of any and all works/efforts of our flesh, then the one who disagrees with Paul is the one who is wrong. If one places his trust and faith in a man-made, non-inspired creed, then he is wrong, especially when any creed adds concepts and descriptive imagery not of biblical origin, for doing such intimates a belief that a mere man or group of men can articulate absolute truth better than the inspired word of God once given to those men who saw Him in person. All other men thereafter who claim otherwise are anathema dare they preach any other gospel than that delivered to us who had that assignment from Christ Jesus.

So, tell me, from your perspective, do you believe what John wrote in 1 John 2:27? Do you REALLY believe one must place his faith in something written by men who were not under inspiration from Holy Spirit? When two say Holy Spirit revealed to each that which is contradictory, one or both are lying, and therefore cannot be true. With that I'm sure can both agree. When one can see the Greco - philosophical - Eastern Mystic influences within that creed in its descriptors, and therefore disagree with its elevation to the level of being THE acid test for salvation, that disagreement isn't intended to bring on all manner of other non-resolvable debates...especially when the scriptures themselves aren't THE common, authoritative grounding from which to gauge all other premise claims.

Of course I believe what John wrote.

Who here doesn't?

Nobody.

Love keeps no record of wrongs

God is love

Lots of verses about love in the NT and only a few about hate.

Interestingly, the Lord who never changes also inspired it to be written that He hates all workers of iniquity. I've been mulling over that verse and its context for years, and the clarity about it from the Lord is revealing, and yet remains totally ignored by those out there who only see God as the Big Sugar Daddy in the sky, who only wants health and wealth for all who claim to follow and believe in Him.

This was a really good redirect to the REAL issue in identifying the real from the fake:

VIDEO

At first I thought you had made a mistake with the title, it isn't our job to go around through a congregation and judge, this one is real, that one is fake. So I listened to the video and it is a girl who is probably (I am inferring the context) telling her mother that her boyfriend is a Christian.

So in this specific context, yes, by all means, you would want to determine if this person was a genuine believer or simply trying to deceive you.

The single best test if your girlfriend is a real or fake Christian

The mother's response that Satan and the demons believe in God, that is not a test, is a very valid point. To her the knife's edge is "obedience". To acknowledge that God is real is not a genuine test, the real test is if you are obedient to the Lord. Anyone can be obedient when the Lord is handing out gifts, by obedience the real question is are you obedient to take up your cross and follow the Lord. That is without a doubt the perfect test.

One of my favorite verses in the whole Bible is in Song of Songs 4:2 Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them.

You have to see the picture that is being painted here. Sheep get shorn each year. That wool is very valuable to us. It keeps us warm and protects us. But when the sheep are shorn it looks funny, maybe even embarrassing to the sheep. Regardless, this chapter of Song of Songs is describing the most beautiful woman and this verse reveals a crucial test. Imagine you are at the Miss America contest and surprise, surprise this year you decide to shave the heads of all the contestants. When these girls come up from having their heads shaved and washed you will see a response, they will open their mouth and you will see their teeth. In most cases you will see snake teeth, two barren little pointed teeth dripping with poison. Hate will come spewing out of their mouths. But if you can find a girl that has a mouth filled with the double blessing after being publicly humiliated like this, well then, that girl is the real thing. I remember Nancy Reagan, she had a lot of insults hurled at her while her husband was President, she couldn't respond as first lady, but as soon as Reagan left the Whitehouse she wrote a book called "My Turn". I didn't read the book but the title looked like snake teeth to me. It seemed to me she planned to respond to this with as much poison as she had received.

I shared this test in Taiwan and one young lady asked "what about the man?" I told her the man is Jesus Christ, He gave His life for us, we just give our hair, not a big deal, it will grow back.

So yes, the mother saying that obedience is crucial, true. But I want to know if while obeying the Lord is your mouth filled with the double blessing or is it filled with a poisonous curse?

How could one be truly obedient with a mouth filled with those serpentine teeth and poison?

Define what you mean by salvation? If you only mean "redeemed" then no, it doesn't include taking up your cross and following Him. But if you include sanctification and glorification, then yes, you must be crucified with Christ so that it is no longer you that live but Christ that lives in you.

By nature we have a serpentine nature. There are many Christians who are redeemed and yet gossip and allow a root of bitterness to grow. Just because you are redeemed doesn't mean you are transformed into the image and likeness of God. There are levels of obedience, the very first thing you are to obey is to be baptized into the name of the Father, and Son and Holy Spirit. So it is a process, not "either or". You start your Christian life with being obedient to the charge to be baptized, and you proceed from there.

John's gospel and his letters is mostly about love though

A lot of believers instinctively gravitate to the his book in the Bible, even though there are heaps of other books in it.

Health and Wealth gospel only focuses on healing and money passages, like. they don't seem to read the entire chapters of the Bible, but I notice if nobody preached on it to poor people they wouldn't see any reward in their lifetime.

A lot of people are sick, have health issues and don't get the medical help they need or have any insurance. They are also poor like not every believer is a middle-class taxpayer.

But this is mostly in the US where this health and wealth gospel originated and has spread to poor populations esp those in Africa.

yes everyone is given 'a measure' of faith and God sometimes sifts people like wheat, Satan also attacks believers and doesn't like it that people have left his dominion and finding the real God through His son.

Satan will buffet them and put thorns in their sides, God will allow it as a test to see how much a believer will rely on Him alone. It's a journey.

Not sure what OP is asking really whether he already knows the answer or is just doing research for a Bible exam and trying to get us to do his homework for him.

He can read books like 'Counterfeit Christianity' and also books about Biblical Cults that explain some of the false gospels around today. A lot of them come from the US. I mean a whole heap...
But then NZ has no great track record either with some of the insane sects that control unwitting believers. Gloriavale anyone?

Hillsong originated in NZ before it went to Australia. But yea thats a whole 'nother story, I mean who was that guy that wrote a. book called 'God wants your money'?? A lot of preachers then use it to fleece the flock claiming to use it for 'tithing' which is a practice that the Jews did for the temple, it was not money, it was food or the bounty reserved for the Levites that they needed to offer because they didn't have any land of their own to farm and produce.

Somehow, modern day preachers twist that around to mean everyone should pay 10% of their income in cash to the church. On top of the taxes they ALREADY pay to the govt.

I think it helps to understand the big picture if we first truly accept what God is. Because he has told us this himself.

Some doctrines insist,God is love.

Is that all?
By one man

Sin entered the world.

Because one Sovereign God let it be so.
