I have wrote a new book. Two, actually. They both Biblically decipher Divorce and Remarriage from the Bible. I take you back to the beginning and speak about Moses' Law and how this effects Gentiles coming into faith in Jesus Christ who wish to divorce their spouse or to get remarried again after a civil divorce according to Roman practices/allowances.
The Orthodox Jews do not allow a woman to initiate a divorce because of Deut. 24:1. They believe only man has that option. It has been that way almost exclusively for 3,300 years. I say almost because, as my friend has pointed out, that their are historically a few accounts of women sending their husband a get.
The State of Israel goes by the teachings of the strict Orthodox Rabbis. You may have heard of the big problem of the agunot (chained women). Many Jewish women have chosen a civil divorce but since the Orthodox Jews only acknowledge divorces where a Get is involved they would consider these women still biblically married and would not allow them to get remarried again until the Get is attained. The Rabbis have been reported to send a team of men out to enforce (torture) these man to give a wife a Jewish Get (Writ of Divorcement) in New York and other States in the US. But, sometimes this type of influence has not work.
In Israel since the women are not allowed to initiate a divorce, they would try and sue their husband due to neglect of food, clothing or love making in court for a divorce and if found guilty the State would throw the men in jail/heavy fines to influence the men to divorce their wives.
The Jewish women are fighting back in the United States, as well as Israel, and demanding that they should be able to divorce their husbands as they they can be divorced by them. And there is an organization fighting for these women to get their Get (ORA).
Something has to give soon!
