Ok, this may not be the best place for this but I will try it anyway.

When you meet someone who has, for lack of a better word, potential, how do you not become focused on them? Obviously you are going to spend some time thinking about them, praying about them, but they shouldn't become the center focus of your life or control your emotions. I got a bit of a reality check the other day and it's kinda been bothering me since....

Any tips, suggestions, or comments on how to stay focused on Christ and not let that someone overtake ALL your thoughts?

This may sound strange but... concentrate on your relationship with that person and not the person themselves.

I made a Youtube video about this like 4 years ago.

For those of you not sufficiently invested to click the link... Its not the person, its the relationship you have with the person that makes it work and keeps you sane.

God is your focus and if you are interested in someone cultivate the relationship you have with them, don't focus on them.

I made that when I first started coming to CC.

I was just upset because my roomie at the time has this massive crush on this girl and he ignored her and wouldn't tell her. So this was my way of addressing the issue.

She liked him too. But they were intimidated by each other.

Funny how sometimes the more attracted we are to a person, the more we shy away from them. Did anything ever come about?

This was a recent question that I posed on a thread called *Simply Distracting*- http://christianchat.com/christian-singles-forum/53954-simply-distracting.html
There were some helpful suggestions that people posted, perhaps it might give you some insight.

Well... no, cause he never did anything. And she felt hurt about that so, she dated this other guy who was kind of hanging around her all the time in her "friend box." after 2 years, they got married.

Ok, one post before I head off to sleep.

If you're gonna be in a relationship/marriage, guess what, your "focus" on God won't be as "focused" as when you're single. Paul talks about this, and it's not really considered a bad/sinful thing, it's just the reality that comes with being in relationship/marriage with someone.

1 Cor 7

32 But I want you to be without care. He who is unmarried cares for the things of the Lord—how he may please the Lord. 33 But he who is married cares about the things of the world—how he may please his wife. 34 There is[a] a difference between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman cares about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But she who is married cares about the things of the world—how she may please her husband. 35 And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction.

When in relationship/marriage your focus will be somewhat divided.
And that's ok, as long as that is what God has for you.

Obviously don't let the person become your "god", but on the other hand don't beat yourself up because you're not as "focused" on God as you were when you were single. Be as focused as you can be obviously, but don't beat yourself up cuz you're giving attention to someone else too.

Interesting. I've never thought of it that way, but it does make sense. I particularly liked this statement: "People want to be understood in the way they understand themselves."

Thank you Arwen! I haven't been around here much lately so I missed that thread. I'll definitely check it out!!

I know when you are in a relationship you can't be as focused because there is someone else to worry about. But there comes a point when you are spending too much time thinking about/praying about/spending time with right? Or no?

I'm just trying to fight my way through all this new stuff, thanks for the help so far. I'm sure there will be more questions....at least I hope so. :)

I think part of keeping yourself in check is guarding your heart. (Proverbs 4:23 (NASB) Watch over your heart with all diligence,For from it flow the springs of life.)

I can only speak for myself, but a few times I've found myself a little too wrapped up in another person. This is usually when God smacks me down (or wakes me up) and calls me to bring the focus back on Himself. :D But I agree that there is nothing wrong or inherently sinful in focusing some attention on another person.. Otherwise how are you to get to know each other?
