I blogged about how Jesus loved the church. Now, let’s focus on what it means for a husband to give himself up - die for his wife. We know that Jesus died a physical death. However, most husbands will never be put in a situation where they have to physically die for their wives. So, if most husbands will never be in a situation where they have to physically die for their wives, what does it mean for a husband to give himself up - die for his wife?
11In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. Romans 6:11-14
Most husbands will probably never be in a situation where they have to physically die for their wives. However, as Christians, WE ARE ALL instructed to die to sin - husbands included.
Therefore, a husband who loves his wife like Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her (died) is going to make it his business to die to sin. That’s powerful!
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 1 John 3:16
How do we lay down our lives (die) for one another? By dying to sin. Can you imagine what would happen if husbands and wives made it their business to die to sin? The effects on marriages and families would be overwhelmingly positive and productive. A lot of what we see going on in society, the breakdown of marriages and families, is the result of spouses unwillingness and failure to die to sin.
Why am I blogging about this? Because there is so much discussion about wifely submission on the internet (CC included). However, in comparison, so little is written about what it means for a husband to give himself up (die) for his wife.
Contrary to popular belief, even in the church, the husband’s responsibility to die for his wife is just as important as wifely submission. So many spouses probably don’t know or think so because so little discussion is centered around the husband’s responsibility to give himself up (die to sin) for his wife.
