Me and my mom have never had an easy relationship. My parents got divorced when I was 8 and I was raised by my dad until I was 14 and then I moved in with my mom. I am 20 now and we are still living together out of convenience. It has been a harsh 5 months. We have been in and out of hotels and other peoples houses and now we are in our home town living with my sister who is not a Christian. My mom and I have always gotten into the occasional arguments, but now we go through them almost every day! She gets mad and says whatever she wants and I respond to it and she turns me into the bad guy. She tells me what to do all the time! Sometimes she will tell me not to shout when she was shouting first! If she gets an attitude, it's okay, but if, GOD forbid, I get one I should be punished. She is NEVER the one that says sorry. That is not an exaggeration. I either have to say it first or she will wait for the moment to blow over. She always cries to me about how she wanted her kids back after my dad took us away, but ever since I first moved in with her she is always the first one to tell us to leave! I would leave if I had the money but I don't. It is like she doesn't really want you with all your issues even when she has many of her own. You have to never get upset! She dared to tell me the I couldn't get a rat when we got an apartment that we would be splitting the rent with! She said "NO"!!! What right does she think she have to do that now that I am an adult?! None! She has always been more of a friend mom than a mom with authority. Also, we both agreed that GOD wants us to stay together for now yet she would so easily go against that because I am not perfect! She is selfish and whiny!!! I need prayer, please.

I believe what you need more than prayer, if I may, is for you to deliberately and willfully obey one of the Ten Commandments: Honor your father and your mother.

Couple months ago I asked this one question after listening to a sermon - what is the most honoring thing I can do for God? I went through my list and concluded that obeying the Ten Commandments is what I can do to honor God the most at the time. I went through the commandments and decided to focus on the 5th one - You shall honor your father and your mother. I thought I was pretty good with this command since I consider myself as a good son and have a pretty close relationship with them, especially with my mom. However, I noticed that there was something in me that requires my attention when I took a close look at all the interaction with my parents, ones including arguments and just life interaction. Whenever I get into an argument with either one of them it is usually because about their relationship. They are still married but not in good terms and I wouldn't be surprised if they file for a divorce any day. Anyways, I began to honor them as much as possible within my ability as a Christian. You know Noel, honoring someone means you defer to them. For instance, if your mom is telling people about where she went and what she saw yesterday and she is not accurate in her story, you don't correct her by saying, "Mom, it was red t-shirt, not blue," or "Mom, there were three puppies, not five." You get the idea, right? If you were with this love of your life (or let's say your favorite female celebrity if there's one) and she's telling people the story about how you and her went to this place and did what and in her story she makes a mistake, would you correct her in front of everyone? You defer to her and just let her finish her story. Right after making that decision to honor my parents, I had to go to downtown to pick up mom after I came back from a long hours of working. She told me she would wait for me in the front entrance of where she was and she wasn't there when I got there. I went into the building looking for her and couldn't find her. At this point I'm worried and mad at the same time. I called her once I came out and she was waiting for me at one of the parking lot entrances. I remember myself getting angry and trying to control my emotion by telling myself honor your mother as I'm on the phone. Then it dawned at me,.. it dawned at me what if this was not my mom but a new girl friend I'm going out with right now? Would I react this way as I'm reacting to my mom? Then I realized that there is issues in me that need to be dealt with or otherwise this will surface up and eventually will treat my wife this way as well. You see Noel, when you are mad at your mom even when you are right and she's downright wrong, it is an indication that there is issues in your life that need to be fixed. If you don't fix this, it will carry over to your personal relationship, i.e., your marriage, and you and your wife will have to deal with them together, which you don't want to carry over for it will definitely cause lot of problems. When God said to honor my father and my mother, it wasn't really about honoring them so they would be honored. But rather, the commandment is there for you to obey so you would be blessed through by honoring your parents. God's commandments or so-called rules are never there to restrict you from being free and take good things away from you but rather to make sure that you clear stay away from sinning and be blessed by obeying them. I believe I have issues that God wants me to be aware of and let Him fix it as I'm going through His loving discipline right now. If I have issues that stem from my parents because of their relationship, I'm sure you got issues that you need to face and deal with when it comes to relationship. You being 20, going through parents' divorce, and living situation will make much harder for you to honor your mother compare to what I went through.

I think it's a great news that both you and your mom are Christians. I know it's hard to understand your mom when she is selfish and whiny. But you, as a son, also need to understand what she had to go through with divorce and all. Trust me, there's no woman out there who does not want a happy marriage. I don't know the cause of the divorce (and whoever was the cause of the divorce is irrelevant) but I am sure she's bitter and vulnerable from that divorce, and not being able to have you when she split and all. You need to be the man in the house, whether she let you or not, by doing what you need to do without complaint and by loving her and honoring her. (Of course, make a constant complaint to God about your situation, emotion, rage and all... but not to your mom). One thing I can tell you from my small experience is that it will change you, and your mom will change to because of your change - the way you treat her by loving her and honoring her. The change has to take place from you first and it will spread to those around you.

Ahhhhhhh.............................. (a long sigh)

I know, I know it's not easy brother.
But I urge you to submit and honor your mother as much as possible.
I will pray for you not so your mom would stop being selfish and whiny but rather so you can stick to the 5th Commandment by honoring your mother. In that way, you will be changed, your mom will be changed through your life, and you will have a better and happier marriage with your future wife down the lane.

God bless Noel and take courage my friend.

She is selfish and whiny!!!

It sounds like you're a good match then...

No, really, I'm sure that the way your mom sounds to you, you sound exactly the same to her. You both want to get upset, but you both don't think the other has the right to get upset, so you get upset over the fact that you don't want them to get upset! Craziness. Not so crazy is getting upset over your mom having 'dictatorship' authority, provided you're actually paying your fair share of not just rent but food utilities upkeep chores etc. If you are, you could defer to mom on the basis of her broader experience, I know now at my age that there are some things I was never going to understand at 20, and that I should have listen a little better to those who had been there done that before.

Otherwise, move out, If you're really pulling your weight with your family, you can pull your wieght with other roommates. Having that daily stress off of all of you may help make you all friends again.

Noel we live in an imperfect world, all of us are work in progress like clay in the hands of a good potter, if we submit to Him He will fashion us and make us beautiful, glorious and blessed vessels but not everyone will chose to submit to Christ , I wish we all submitted to Him.

I pray may the peace of God overshadow your heart and may you be able to feel the Love, compassion and the grace found in Christ. God loves us as a Father and mother
Isaiah 66:13
As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; .........."

Let it be that you make yourself a better person than your mom and might be she will someday able to see the beautiful angel God gifted her as a daughter.

Sometimes parents are not able to give the love and care they are suppose to grant , I don't know the reason might be they need the blessed grace of God in their lives, might be when I become a parent I can learn the difficulties parents suffer, so till then lets keep our parents in our love and prayer's.

Lets choose to be patient with them, may God give you the strength and grace you need to be a blessed loving daughter.

Prayed.
Glory be to God.
God bless you.

I truly wish it was easy enough to just say that we all have our problems and move on, but she never moves on. I know some of it is my fault because I am quicker to anger these days. Living an athiest's roof is not easy, even when it is temporary and not being stable for 5 months sucks. But, when someone is telling you what you can and can't do and just will not let it go when you are an adult, it becomes a bigger problem. She also tells me to do things for her that are not for me to do and then pitches a fit when I say no. She says it is a learning experience, but how is me going between you and someone you don't want to deal with going to teach me anything? I have done that with her and my dad my whole life and I am not going to do that with her mom or other people she just does not want to talk to! I was not put on this earth to be her messenger! I'm her daughter! I need prayer to touch us both so we can resolve this. I am losing my family due to a lack of willingness to try harder. They all give up way too easily and I am trying my best keep them apart of my life, but they have to be willing to work with me. I do not want my mom to become another family member that just goes away.

I have told all of this stuff to my mom, by the way. We are very honest with one another. We don't really have secrets. At least we got that right. She still ignores it, though.
