I AM NOW FREE (A RIFF ON A SERMON BY JOYCE MEYER)
The greatest army on earth behind, I
Looked to see Egyptian chariots:
A sea of locusts, dragons, steel scythes,
Bronze, sun-blazoned helmets- they decried, ones
With me, since I lead them here whence to die
In great pains by spear, sword, instead “Let us
Go back to be their slaves, see our babes, might
Live ourselves past this day! Why thence, God, must
With thee lead us to such an awful end!?
Before you brought us we said, ‘let us be.
For better be a slave in Opulence then
A corpse in the desert.” Said I with teeth
Chattering-slight, “Be not afraid behold
The salvation of God that He wroughts for thee
This day.” Putting my faith in my eyes; rolled
My sleeves, teeth bared with courage, staff strong, gleams
Of sun on its brown skin in anointed
Hands-mine. Then He told me, “Why do you cry
To me (How many times I’ve said I’d bless,
Deliver thee)? Take that rod. Part that sea.
My people will walk through it on dry land...”
So here I stand. Sometimes the last steps be
The hardest and most thrilling for mountain-
Climbers, faith walkers. Seems a moment’s three,
A step is seven. Time slows. In the zone,
His spirit with me. Overcome feelings
Of doubt, fear, drive them out. Faith walk my own,
This time, to serve I AM. A nation’s birth
Canal is the dry land (how is it dry?) at
The bottom of this roaring, great sea… Beat
I the earth and like a trained beast waters
Draw apart – sinews of muscles-watery,
Lift with volcanic groans of eruption,
Shaking the earth. Depths, width stretching so high
But a portion of noonday sky still seen.
Now the crossing from bondage to freedom
Now I walk, smile a warriors delight.
Smile with a child’s gladness, utter glee,
Frightened people behind me but I see
The end, been told “The waters I’ll let greet
Pharaoh and all his army. And they shall
Know that I AM The Lord who saveth thee.”
All this with His stuttering, humble, hot-
Tempered man’n, my brother- my words to speak..
The moment finally here: Freedom! We
Are Free- Thank You I AM I am now free!!!
