Sounds islamic. We don't HAVE to use instruments, but we can, and who wouldn't want to? How did it become a SIN from something that was loved and practiced in worship? Nobody plays music as a means to keep a law. It's just a lovely, fun thing to do and a wonderful way to express your love for the Lord. Doesn't God deserve our best? It's a beautiful way to worship.
Denominations are a terrible divisive creation of mankind.
Not Islamic at all... it's merely one tenet that is shared by many CofC's, to "speak where the Bible speaks, and be silent where the Bible is silent".
This is a pretty good guideline, when dealing with doctrine, but I believe that's one of the errors of the CofC... trying to make our worship service a doctrinal thing.
Nowhere does scripture mention church buildings, or pews, or songbooks, or whether to use a single cup, or multiple little cups in communion.... or, for that matter, how many times to take communion..... or the use of instruments in worship.
Again, "who wouldn't want to" use instruments? People that are used to great acapella singing, usually. I have no scriptural issue with instruments as an aid to singing, but I much prefer acapella. I am in favor of just almost anything that improves our worship of God. My very limited experience with instrumental worship has shown me that instruments do not improve our worship to any extent, and in fact, seems to be a detriment. Looking around during a song, I have estimated that perhaps 20% of the folks are singing..
During the acapella service, it's more like 80% are singing. This is just the experience I've had over the past 6 months or so. Our acapella service (the early service) is usually standing room only. The instrumental service (late service) is never over half full. Before we went instrumental, the distribution was more in favor of the late service..
