Yea they had things like 'Sock hops' which were dances held in high school gyms, where the young teenyboppers danced in their socks.
This was to stop them ruining the wooden floors.
That generation were encouraged to date, start families and have children because it was post war and they needed to repopulate the earth..and housing was cheap, jobs were plentiful. Hence baby boomers.
It is a COMPLETELY different world these days. I grew up in a time when AIDS was a threat and going rampant. at high school the teachers encouraged us to have 'safe sex', we were never taught marriage or homemaking skills. Parenting, we had Plunket nurses but that was kind of it. Babies died of cot death, until they found the cause (toxic mattresses and suffocation)
The threat of the apocalapyse was engrained in a lot of peoples minds, Y2K, end times hysteria. Youth had no future, no jobs, and little prospects. You went into debt to have higher education. And then left the country to avoid paying it.
