If thats true, God resist those who keep puffing up how obedient they are, And gives grace to the sinner who constantly falls on his knees and acknowledging how he has failed. and apart from Gods grace, needs his salvation.

So is God going to give mercy to people who keep shouting obedience obedience (think of the pharisee)?

How do we work for a gift? Your saying by our works he owes us salvation?

Great questions...

Grace was provided before we even knew God. He loves us that much. We are saved by grace through faith in what Jesus has done. We don't "earn" salvation by doing things.

It's a free gift because He loves us and wants us there with Him for eternity. He gives us promises tom live by in this earth so that we can experience his life while we are here too. God is not looking for ways to "keep us away from Him".

In Hebrews 10:26, to "sin willfully" in the Greek carries the idea of deliberate intention that is habitual, which stems from rejecting Christ deliberately. This is CONTINUOUS ACTION - A MATTER OF PRACTICE.

Now we don't walk along our daily life and accidently fall into a pit called sin. We exercise our will but, the use of the participle clearly shows a CONTINUOUS ACTION. The unrighteous practice sin - (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21) not the righteous, who are born of God - (1 Corinthians 6:11; 1 John 3:9).

In context, we see in verse 39, the author sets up the contrast that makes it clear to me that he was referring to unbelievers, not saved people: But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul. Those who draw back to perdition do not believe to the saving of the soul and those who believe to the saving of the soul do not draw back to perdition.

To be understood correctly one must recognize that Hebrews was written to believers. Please read the scripture...

Eternal life is in God's Son (vs 11).

He who has the Son has life and he who does not have the son does not have life (vs 12).

Believe on the name of the Son of God and you know you have eternal life (vs 13).

The Son of God gives us an understanding that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life (vs 20).

Eternal life is eternal life.

For those of us that believe and have faith in the cross work of our dear Lord were promised eternal life. If we can lose that, it would not be eternal and God would be a liar, but thank God He is truth so we are sealed into the day of redemption.

I guess this is a really good point. about free will and all.

Except the phrase is NOT found in the Bible. The reason it is not found in the Bible, is that it puts man in charge of his own salvation. That means everything he says and does can either earn him or lose his salvation. Very sad that a mortal, sinful person is in charge of their own salvation. I'm so glad I don't have to worry about that nonsense.

But if you believe God is sovereign and you actually read the Bible, fortunately, we don't have "free will" where salvation is concerned, and we can trust what God says in both the Old and New Testaments, that he will "never leave or forsake us"

"He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deut. 31:6; Hebrews 13:5

He calls home sinners....not the obedient..,most of the folks who think they are obedient deceive themselves.

If they could save themselves by works of the Law, then why would they need A savior?

Yes, but only the ones who are obedient (repent, believe) receive grace.

People need to get our of their heads the idea that obedience is works of law.

I have nothing against obedience to the Law. It's part of learning to live a godly life which comes after the new birth.

It's part of sanctification, when we add to our faith , knowledge and self control and perseverance.

However grace is when God reaches into our lives and pull us away from sinful living for ourselves and breaks our hearts to how we are breaking His. How we hurt others, how we are enslaved to sin.

We don't earn grace because until God gives it to us we don't realize why we need to repent.

That's exactly what obedience is. Jesus and John came proclaiming repent and believe. Those who obeyed, their sins were forgiven.

but now has been revealed, and through the prophetic scriptures has been made known according to the command of the eternal God, resulting in obedience of faith to all the Gentiles, Romans 16:26

Anyone who believes their salvation is dependent on their actions after justification is guilty of self-righteousness. It robs God of glory and is a denunciation against the work of Christ on the cross.

We don't work for salvation, nor do we work to keep it.
